Clamping Plates - 8 x 6.5 Wheels

I am in the process of replacing the wheels and tires. I am going from the 17" rims to 16" steels. After doing a little research it appears I need will need the clamping plates.

Does anyone know where I can buy these? Are they available aftermarket or will I have to source a set from a used vehicle? Thanks.

I couldn't find them new. I wound up selling my alum Alcoas to a board member & as part of the deal got the plates he was using. Prob going to be the classifieds, craigslist, or a wrecking yard as your source.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
It's like a highly skilled Morrocan sword fighter with a Damascus Steel Scimitar.....

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

you will need to source a set from a used vehicle. carefully inspect the lug taper bore, if the taper is messed up severely it may constantly loosen up on you. there is typically plenty of meat on the clamping plate to clean up the taper, stock was a 45 degree, or more commonly known as a 90 degree cone.

Thanks Scoti and 1967Kaiser. It seems these are the final components I am missing before I can go forward with replacing everything.

Does anyone know if they offer a 16” 8x6.5 steel rim without having to use the clamp? I have been looking at Accuride’s product catalog mostly and those still require them

Can anybody tell me what a "clamping plate" is?

I honestly have no idea, and Google isn't my friend today.

Re: Clamping Plates - 8 x 6.5 Wheels

And focused...you have to have them for steel wheels because the rims can be reversed....one rim facing in,one facing out,,,so they cant cut the lug seat in the rim due to this...that's why the plate
Not saying they dont ,but I've not seen steels without the lug ring
I'd say hit the junk yards or pullaparts...

Thank you Mongocanfly. I have been wondering why this is the case and that makes perfect sense.

Re: Clamping Plates - 8 x 6.5 Wheels

I just found these,

https://www.crofttrailer.com/cr33521...heel-8-on-6-5/

It looks like it might require having rims with that 9th oblong hole. Or possibly cut the locating tab off the ring. Doesn't state taper either, but almost all trucks use a 90 degree cone as that provides the best clamping force.

Re: Clamping Plates - 8 x 6.5 Wheels

If you search around they make a flanged lug nut so you don’t need the plates I believe it was a 97 p30 that my 19.5s came off they used them but you’d need the matching studs or find the right lugs here is a link https://www.summitracing.com/parts/r...silverado-3500

Re: Clamping Plates - 8 x 6.5 Wheels

73-87(up to 1991 old style) used a 9/16-18 stud. I dont remember the previous cutoff, as they used a 1/2 inch stud, but I think that was up to 1972 only.

a flanged nut will work, the best design uses a captured washer, so the washer can spin

Re: Clamping Plates - 8 x 6.5 Wheels

I used the Dodge flanged lug nuts until I got the clamping plates. I needed the clamping plates to allow using 'conversion' (external thread) lug nuts as they're required for my 'optional' look for my steelies (OE 88-98 caps or the full wheel hubcaps).

Re: Clamping Plates - 8 x 6.5 Wheels

They make the flanged lug nuts with the external threads but they are metric m14x1.50 that’s why I mentioned I wasn’t sure I thought they were older then what they were and available in a 9/16-18 my plan was powder coat my 19.5s silver rickson trim rings and stock silver center caps

Re: Clamping Plates - 8 x 6.5 Wheels

GonicGM - just sent you a PM.

Thanks for the link to the lug nuts, if I am unable to come up with clamps I will go that route. This is great, thank you everyone.
