Re: Blood Sweat and Tears.. 67 Build Thread

Managed to get all the holes that have been drilled in the bed side to pull dents and hold tons of bondo in welded up and ground down... BUT I stressed the metal in the biggest flat spot just behind the cab and its tin canning now... I guess I have to study up how to fix that before moving on. Has any of you guys used the cold compressed air and heat gun method to de-stress metal before?

Started "Trying" to disassemble the bed as well and found I need a second person to push down on the castle bolts to keep them from spinning...

I'm going to HAVE to find some good tail sections with the tail light sections for these bed sides if I'm going to save them... Any ideas where to find those?

I swear I'm at a point where I just want to hand it over to someone to finish up on the body...

Oil canning sheet metal can be a pain, hammer and dolly to stretch it to keep it out and torch to red to shrink to hold it in. Do some research on heat shrinking with a torch before you try on the body. Heat gun is not hot enough to shrink. That process works on hail dents. The bungee hooked on the bars held the carriage bolts then cut them off with cut off wheel.

I suppose I wont be re-using any of the bolts so.. cutting them it will be... I have a steel floor and will be doing a wood one with a new bed front. The heat shrinking sound a bit scary but Ill look up some vids and give it a shot...
Thanks Metaldoc, I appreciate that. Any advice on those rear corners?

If the metal around the lights is solid, a 180 deg. hook on a slide hammer. remove the taillight housing and you should get in with that. Replacing both bed sides would fix the all the problems. It might be cheaper to replace than to repair with all the body work involved on the box sides.

I know it would be easier to just replace them, But I would rather put the money elsewhere. Its only costing me time and a few bucks to fix them... Thats 1400 bucks that would buy some nice stuff under the hood or in the cab. Sucks being on a budget...

Re: Blood Sweat and Tears.. 67 Build Thread

I just started catching up on your restore post here. Auburn is where I went to college so I'm a little attached to your truck already. You really have invested a lot of hard work, you sure haven't taken the easy route, every step has been hand to hand combat...very proud of you for hanging in there. I purchased my truck in a small town just north of Auburn but yours was in much better condition! I'd be happy just to get mine back to the shape yours was in before you started!

Not yet but I guess I could get one going...just decided this past weekend to finally after all these years to get her started. Many things I am unsure of such as engine and trans selection even though I know it will be a manual. Color and interior I have no idea either, nothing over the top. But I am 100% decided on plenty enough to get started such as just a basic solid frame, suspension, and presentable bodywork.

Maybe by starting a thread, it will help keep me motivated, have you found this to be the case at any point along your build?

Absolutely... I only have maybe 2 friends at home that are interested in it. Its been a solo build from the start other than getting someone to help with the lifting of heavy stuff. If it wasnt for this forum I would have thrown in the towel a while back. Guys on here have been great and I feel obligated to see this through for bragging rights on here lol.

As far as yours goes... If I had a nickle for every time I have changed my mind on colors and interior design during this build I would have been able to afford to just pay someone else to do the work... I still aint 100% sure on the orange yet. Ill know what color its going to be when I leave the paint store with the box full of paint lol The wheels will be determined once its painted. Only way to do it is to just grab a wrench and start pulling it apart.

No body work today. Cleaned the garage up a bit and did manage to get this cleaned up and painted. It will do the job for a while while I save for the 5 or 6 speed. I wasn't going to spend the time sanding the rough case since its not going to be under there for very long.
