Brake booster push rod

I am getting ready to media blast the correct original brackets and braces and install. The previous owner converted it to power brakes by adding a booster and cobbling together a pushrod for it and threading it into the end on the brake pedal. It is one booger welded piece of crap. I have not taken it apart yet, but can that pushrod just be replaced with the proper one or is it wise to get a new booster? The brakes worked great so I’d rather just find the correct pushrod, but the local parts store folks look at me just cluelessly.

Re: Brake booster push rod

I don't know if you have NAPA in Vacaville, but around here we have all the chains and then we have two NAPA stores. I tend to make the drive into town to go to the NAPA with the more knowledgeable staff, but I've given up talking to the guys at O'Reilly or Autozone.
I just can't handle the first thing out of their mouth being "year, make, and model" when it's for a generic part. I've also gotten the wrong part way too many times from them to want to waste my time there.

I will definitely be headed up to NAPA today. Need new exahaust donuts too. I try only to buy from there anyhow, they at least know what the part may be without the standard just the facts questions.

I love the Napa store in Vacaville. Very seldom do I get the deer in the headlight look. Iwas there a couple hours ago.

Re: Brake booster push rod

You should be able to change it or get an aftermarket booster , at the least please cut and weld properly , brakes are kind of important

Re: Brake booster push rod

A little photo evidence for the brake pushrod crap and the bad bracket they used. I may end up doing new brake lines sooner rather than later while I’m at it. They are pretty beat up from the conversion at the master and valve body. They did all this work and I have no boot on the brake pushrod either.

Re: Brake booster push rod

Ol BlueI actually was in the store about that same time picking up something else, but didn’t even think about the push rod as I was so frustrated after the previous two stops.

I’ll post up a pic of the garbage in there now. PO was pretty surprised when I showed him what his “mechanic” improvised for the power brake upgrade. The guy claimed to love old trucks and work on several of his own. Unfortunately that is one reason I move away from old cars and trucks going down the road, a lot are lipstick on a pig or just plain unsafe. Did I mention I just discovered this same mechanic also failed to put a nut on the steering shaft to keep the wheel on?! Looked like he fouled up and cross threaded the puller and cross threaeded a 1/2x18 nut on the first couple threads. Some guys should not be allowed near tools.

Re: Brake booster push rod

If the length is correct any machine shop can whip you a good straight one out in a jiffy if you don't have access to a lathe or a buddy with one.

Re: Brake booster push rod

Another question to go along with this.

I misplaced the clevis pin for the pushrod where it attaches to the bell crank on the bracket. The one I had was missing the clip when I bought it. I took it with me to try and find a clip at the hardware and a parts stores. No luck and in the process I think I may have lost it. Do you think this pin and clip will work? If not anyone have a pin as I now have found where I can buy the clip?
