I really hate liers

Car show today . Guy pulls a 70 "LS 6 " ss chevelle off an inclosed trailer . Really Nice car car , ask him if he has the papers to go with the car since after 68the only way to tell an SS is from the papers . He Looks at me like I am ignorant . I have my 66 138 ss396 at the show, not two cars from him . Look at some of the details and I know it's a Malibu. Guy is adamant that it's a real deal car says look at the dash and the engine. I can put a big block in anything doesnt make it the real deal

Really ?

Re: I really hate liers

I had a '65 Tempest convertible that I was restoring when I got laid off when "peace broke out" in '91. I got down to selling my camping trailer and this car to make the mortgage. The guy I sold it to told me that he was going to "GTO" it. Anyone who knows anything knows that the serial numbers are different. He also said that the car was only worth $1k, but that he would go ahead and give me the $2k sale price. His big-breasted girlfriend really seemed impressed with his bargaining prowess.

I Agree
I don't ever want to be (That Guy).

I still have my 63 Impala.
( high school ) car I had 3 good chances with
the parts cars I bought to change it to a SS with Bucket seats.
It will stay a bench seat Impala.
That I should have grown up in.
But Growing up is (Way Over-Rated)

I might have been a little harsh . He may have bought it thinking it's the real deal . Without paper work it's just a Malibu or a Chevelle.

Did you check the cowl tag?
Coulda been a Canadian built SS454 that had the LS6 intake, carb etc swapped onto it. There’s one like that around here.
Z15 and Z25 Canadian built cars were stamped with the rpo on the cowl tag.

Re: I really hate liers

There are clones out there with the right motor, right cars with wrong motors, all numbers matching, COPOs, and there are cars that are just damn nice. I only care about the last group and that can come from any group. All the paperwork and numbers are for the owners and others to be impressed by. I'm glad I like most cars better than most owners and paper. And I'm especially glad the hot cars I like are the ones built by owners before the factories started offering store-bought performance

Re: I really hate liers

Very easy to get docs for a Canadian built car. It's all available from gm . I quess the government makes them keep all records of cars built there.

I have no problem with clones or tribute cars many real nice ones locally. But they make no claims to being the real deal. I'll have to chalk this one up as a clone . Like I said it was beautiful car. I would own it

Re: I really hate liers

I meet a lot of uninformed owners at car shows.
Usually, they buy what they like without caring about the proof if it's real.
I don't argue with them because they just get mad.
Having a few older cars myself, I do get frustrated by people who "know it all" and like to tell me what I have!
For instance,my 67 El Camino is not an S.S. and never was! Didn't happen in 67.
I own 2,4 door hardtops.A 57 and a 65.Both are called Sport Sedans.Does that make them S.S.'s?
My 68,C-10 is an Anniversary Special. I've been told they didn't come with bucket seats.
And,finally,at a car meet,I asked a man with a Ford t-bucket if the 327 in it was original. He said no, the original 283 blew up a long time ago!We both had a good laugh!
That's what it's all about-having a good time!
Mike.

Re: I really hate liers

My Mustang was built as a Boss 429 clone by the P.O. First thing I did when I got it was to take the 429 stickers off the fenders. People kept asking me if it was real. I didn't like that. It isn't.

Without the stickers they just say nice car. Much better.

I fail to understand why anyone would care enough to even ask a clone's owner to prove anything at a car show. If you're both selling your cars at auction, competing for buyers, maybe. But at a Saturday show and shine?

X2, going to have to agree. Most classics on the road now are far from original to begin with. There's probably more SS Camaros and Chevelles on the road right now than we're even built by the General. Let's not forget the 427 Vettes either. The fact of the matter is that there was only certain number built, some survived, alot didn't. If you wanted one as a kid, but couldn't afford one, why not build it yourself?

Some of the most valuable muscle cars were actually conversions anyway. I bet Carole Shelby and Don Yenko felt guilty about cutting up new cars on their way to the bank.

Unless you're going to Pebble Beach or going for The Bloomington Gold, what's it really matter.

It started as talking about our cars and it got on the subject about how 68 and older SS chevelles all had a vin that started with 138. So all you need is that vin and you know it was an original. Not if it was a 325 hp or 375 hop buckets or other options . I have my build sheet the shows 325hp buckets with black console m22 trans drum non power brakes.

Then I went on that 69 and newer ss cars need documentation for authenticity. He told me flat out I didnt know what the f I was talking about . Conversation ended right there.

It's not like I asked him flat out . But he kept going on and on about the car and had one of those nice placards on front of it.

You kidding right? What Shelby ,Yenco, Baldwinn did was make a product that the factory wouldn't make. They wernt trying to make a copy of someone else's car.

I highly doubt they were laughing all the way to the bank since yenko cars were not that much more than the factory cars. They didnt go crazy till 30 plus years later.

I'm glad we can all see this eye to eye, even if it doesn't really look like it. Phrases like "You had to be there" come to mind. You never know how the topic comes up. You don't know the other guy wasn't doing all the talking.

I can see where you’re coming from. But as an owner of a somewhat hard to find k/5 factory 2wd blazer. It’s incredibly annoying when someone rolls in with a conversion and acts like it’s the real deal. I personally don’t call them out on it, but it stills drives me nuts.

Re: I really hate liers

I had an acquaintance who bought a 67 Camaro because he decided it would be the rarest one in existence, since it still had a straight 6.

I tend to lean with the "let them believe what they want to" crowd. Unless I'm interested in buying it I don't really care. I've discovered an appreciation for most classic cars and the care and work that goes into them, even if the style choices are not what I would choose.

Re: I really hate liers

I personally have no problem with whatever someone wants to modify or create a clone of a vehicle they own as long as it's not being passed off as the real thing especially when up for sale.

I built a 67 Firebird 400 "Ram Air" Clone back in the early 90's, there where only 65 Ram Air Firebirds built in 1967.

The biggest hurdle was solved by dumb ass luck when I stumbled across the NOS air induction sheet metal in the Hemmings, that's what started the whole "Money Pit" process.

I never once passed it off as an original, I ended up selling it to a pure Pontiac man to add to his collection.

Sorry for the bad pic, but it's taken off a old photo before all the modern tech phone pic's.

When done right, it's just the most tasteful custom you could possibly built. Make a car appear to be what would have been more or less a factory custom. We can all build badass cars, but when the factory does it, it is different. And we can clone that. But that should never be passed off as real. More like extra effort to make sure people understand it was "built".

Re: I really hate liers

I agree with the sentiment that you can build a tribute or clone all day long and currently you are only limited by the depth of your pocket and willingness to spend money. However, when showing or selling don't try to pass it off as original.

As to the situation described, the guy might not really know any better and spent a lot of money thinking his car was the real deal. Folks get their feelings hurt pretty quickly over stuff like that. OR, the guy could be a blow hard that is full of himself. I've seen a lot of ignorant folks with money think they have class and the upper hand but in reality it's quite the opposite.

Either way, unless asked, I don't feel like I'm the guy to be telling someone their baby is ugly. It's not that I am non-confrontational, I just prefer to be happy instead of right. No need arguing with people when I don't need to or when the outcome really doesn't affect me.

Re: I really hate liers

Personally, I'd rather have a clone than a real "numbers matching" anything. I drive my cars and could care less about paperwork. You can't drive a build sheet.

A big block Malibu dressed up to look like an SS gives you the exact same experience and you don't have to worry as much about door dings and stuff. As long as you're not trying to sell it as authentic, it makes no difference.

Real 1970 LS6 Chevelle = $150k and you can't drive it without your insurance broker wanting a waiver signed.

Malibu with a 454 and some SS stripes = $20k and you can beat the snot out of it daily with no hesitation.

Doesn't seem like a difficult choice to me.
