Re: Not a Chevy but cool

That's an unusual site. Back then they were all over and just disappeared. I never see them in junk yards either. Kinda like Japan reclaimed all their little vehicles through recycling push or they just turned to rust dust.

Re: Not a Chevy but cool

That looks like a Datsun Sunny pickup. Those are pretty rare compared to the 520/ 620 pickups from that time.

I don't know if those Sunnys were even sold in the US when new.

Re: Not a Chevy but cool

When I lived in Japan, we use to call those and the Corolla version the Japanese El Caminos. I don't ever remember them selling the Sunny versions in the US either, but I was in Japan for the 70s and early 80s, so I was a bit out of touch on what was on the US roads then. I had the Toyota version (this one is a 69) as my first ride in Japan.

Re: Not a Chevy but cool

Mad dad had a few of the 520/620 trucks when I was a kid. Road rough as a lumber wagon unless something heavy was in the bed.

What strikes me is the size. The C10 is not a large truck by today's standards but it makes that little thing look like a dwarf.

You aught to try and fit in one and drive them at 6-1 and size 14 shoes, it was a CHALLENGE!

I like the little pick ups in general. I had a Luv for awhile and I had a VW Diesel truck, that thing was a slug going up long hills lol. Dunno why I got out of the little trucks. I like the one you posted, ah the good ol days.

Re: Not a Chevy but cool

I believe someone imported that one. We never had them around here and I never saw any anywhere else, either.

I test drove a 620, green with slots, at a used car lot in '76. I like them but never owned any min-trucks. I'd like to get into them but you real don't see any of the earlier ones. My friend has a LUV Mikado when I lived in Colorado a while. I drove that some. I always wanted a '72 LUV converted to 4wd, But I always needed a full-size truck for work

Re: Not a Chevy but cool

I was thinking about buying a brand new LUV back in 1979 when they by that time had factory 4wd. But they wanted more money for a little LUV than for a full size K pickup!

It wouldn't have worked to pull my camper trailer anyway. The V-8 four speed manual K/10 that I bought probably got as good of gas mileage as the little four banger would have: 18 mpg at then legal 55 mph.

Re: Not a Chevy but cool

Yeah, I remember the gas crunch days of the '70s when a premium was put on the small trucks and cars. You could buy a nice full-size '60s-'70s car for a couple hundred dollars. and the little trucks were cool if that was all you needed, but they couldn't do half of what a 1/2t American truck could do. You might get double thge gas mileage but it took two trips to haul the same load. Thing was, load one up and it got 15 mpg, so not even cheaper on fuel when it came to work. Towing? Hauling a third man? Hauling long material? couldn't even lay a sheet of plywood flat in the bed. I liked them, but was not at the point in life where I could spend extra money to save money on a second truck to use when I didn't need all the truck. That's how things stayed because I just got used to the fuel mileage as the was it was. I never needed less than a 3/4t and absolutely relied on 4wd until later when they started cracking down on sediment control. Hanging siding, we worked off the truck. It went to where the work was, siding in bed, scaffold on top, tunes in the cab! That truck was well known as The mean Green Siding Machine

Palf's little Yoty looks like it should have 5" headlamps. Those 7s are sure squeezed in like an afterthought. I always wanted the earlier Datsun 320. I never saw many of those back in the day, and none now. And all the girls say, "It's so cute"

My son is a little truck guy. He's had a '97 Nissan reg cab 4cyl/5spd, a '98 Ranger Flareside reg cab 4cyl/5spd, and now an '07 Toyota X-Runner which all of those are ext cab V6/6spd. He's into "toying" with it and if I had the money for a new hobby I'd get into it with him. It would have been cool if he had followed my footsteps into the older GM Truck thing, but it's cool he's into trucks but those of his liking. So to get into doing more with him I've realized it would be cool if we could start building cool minis. I had my buddy's Sonoma 4cy/5spd a week or so and really dug it. The handling was like no fullsize truck could compare to. The banger had plenty of pep, whatever he had done to it, and he had plans to turbo it until he sold it. Now he is building an LS-powered all wheel drive Sonoma. Think Cyclone, that is the vibe. I'm surprised he's not using a Buick turbo V6 since those cars have been his specialty all his driving years. I'd like to get an early Datsun (520) or LUV and do a road racing version

Re: Not a Chevy but cool

It's soooooooooooooooo widdle!

I saw a ton of vintage Toyota/Datsuns when I was out in socal a few times that I had NEVER seen before, nor knew existed....

The weirdest stuff was when I went to Jamaica... and saw all the crew cab versions of the 80s/90s Toyotas/Nissans small trucks that we never got here, we only got the reg and ext cabs.

These old Datsuns are really going up in price. I can't believe what the Z cars are worth now.

Here's a '65 pickup

Re: Not a Chevy but cool

Where I spent the most of my working years ..not hardly anyone bought a Datsun or Toyota's as there were to many union workers who swore by American Union made ,,now I am talking of the years around 1960 to 70 or so.. I did buy a 82 Toyota long box and I did have a friend back in the 60ies who's parents bought Hillmans for their paper route..

This little truck would sure catch the eyes at car and truck show though..pretty neat
