Identifying a 1971 Cheyenne vs Cheyenne Super

Is there a thread that shows the differences between a 1971 Cheyenne vs Cheyenne Super? Do they both have woodgrain door panels? Headliners? Cargo lamps?

Is the only difference the "Super" emblems and the Super got the Houndstooth seat upholstery?

I know it's a Cheyenne by the Z84 option code, but what differentiates a Cheyenne Super from a Cheyenne in 71 besides the seat material?

Super Fender badges, and wood grain dash bezel.....tailgate band?......all the other things mentioned are on both I think. Spid would say Super...YE9..What trim is on your tail gate? Upper and lower trim, and tailgate band?.....Jock posted ......Post a real Cheyenne Super only (aka the definitive Cheyenne Super thread)!....may help to look thru it...

I’m not an expert by any means, haven’t really been in the 67-72 work all that long but I think it would have to have the YE9 code on it somewhere to be a true super.

Yes. I know it's a Cheyenne and not a Super but I'm trying to identify the visual differences between the two in 1971 in particular. 1972 seems a lot easier with the metal door inserts with the woodgrain on them.

Re: Identifying a 1971 Cheyenne vs Cheyenne Super

Difference between 71 Cheyenne Super and Cheyenne visually is the addition of woodgrain instrument bezel, woodgrain gb door with aluminum tray and nameplate on gb door, seat cover, and the chrome tailgate handle. 71 and 72 Cheyenne and Cheyenne Super all have woodgrain trimmed door panels (just different style panels between 71 and 72, that’s all) and all had a headliner.

Your glovebox door has the “high placement” of a 72 Cheyenne super emblem too.
There is a thread here somewhere showing this somewhat unusual placement.

That one looks too high and is an owner install I think.

The emblem placement does look dumb, I did a quick search and couldn't find where some are placed high, maybe someone else will chime in.

Re: Identifying a 1971 Cheyenne vs Cheyenne Super

Keep in mind that that woodgrain, tray, and emblem have been added to that gb door by someone after it left the factory. But I agree, it looks like it came from an original donor (not aftermarket) so I would have thought it would have been in the normal location too (ie nameplate holes already present in the tray and woodgrain)

Btw - that is a very cool truck. 71 K10 Cheyenne in solid hugger. Oh my.

Not to mention hugger on saddle. Saddle is my personal favorite interior color on these trucks. This truck is definitely loaded up with some pretty cool stuff, posi, manual throttle, tilt, auxiliary battery, camper wiring.... it’s always interesting to see how you could get a truck back then, like this with a lot of cool options but not have stuff like AC, or locking hubs etc. I wish you could still check the boxes so to speak when ordering today and get a truly unique truck custom tailored to what you need or really want. Op, do you have any more pictures of it?

I would like to see a photo of the tailgate. Unclear to me if a regular Cheyenne came with lower trim and a tailgate band in 71.

Re: Identifying a 1971 Cheyenne vs Cheyenne Super

I think the lower trim with a band is only unlcear on blazers....but im in to see it.

I looked for the high placement thread on the glovebox door emblem and cant find it.
I would presume someone put the woodgrain on the door and if so it was a used piece, which would already have been drilled, if NOS then maybe someone placed it high.

BTW, I really like the truck...HUGGER ORANGE is cool...and I would leave the super stuff on it!

Re: Identifying a 1971 Cheyenne vs Cheyenne Super

here is a picture of the spid on my 71 super. don't know if this helps. my question is how common is the wood floor on a super? I have owned several of them but they all had steel floors.

unrelated to being a Super (not that you were asking that) - could have a wood floor with any of the four trim levels - so not rare or unrare on a Super, just another "thing". It wasn't an upgrade, it was a choice - one that, if not made, the buyer got a steel floor as standard.

Here’s a quick guide that answers the op question.

I also wanted to comment on aj1968 spid. I never saw one with spelling errors like the paint color. The font seams squished together too. Maybe just me.

Re: Identifying a 1971 Cheyenne vs Cheyenne Super

My truck has "596 WHT & HUG ORG & WHT" for the color description. It also says "TURBO HYDRA-MATUC" for the transmission. There is a "U" instead of an "I" in "MATIC". I've seen other Fremont trucks with the same misspelling.

It's the truck in my avatar. When my FiL had it repainted he let the body shop paint the lower part orange instead of the original white. Someday, I will fix that, as I like that look better. They already had the paint. It puzzles me why they didn't just shoot it as original? I already have leftover paint from when I redid the roof before the new camper shell went on. Needs a little body work down below...liposuction.

Re: Identifying a 1971 Cheyenne vs Cheyenne Super

I think sometimes folks skip the white lower of the 69-79 Special Two Tone during a repaint because they think the white so easily shows the dirt and road splash from the tires - but I agree, looks much nicer with the white if that’s how it was born (or even if it wasn’t). Just a theory though.

Might have been covered on another thread, painted hubcaps were standard on a Cheyenne 20 ?

Re: Identifying a 1971 Cheyenne vs Cheyenne Super

Yes, base hub caps standard on C/K10-30 Cheyennes. Since most folks ordered PO3s (or PO1s or PO3s on a 1/2 ton) if they ponied up the $ for a Cheyenne, you don't see many like this. But it is why you will normally see PO3 on a Cheyenne SPID (if ordered) and not on a Cheyenne Super SPID (standard with package). (But, note that you WILL see PO1s on a 1/2 ton Cheyenne Super SPID, if ordered - since full wheel covers were an option above the standard PO3 on a Super).
Great addition to the list that answers the op's question factorystock

71 Supers had a chrome tailgate latch assembly where 72 Supers had a SS slip on handle cover.

I want to know how much more money was the Cheyenne Supper over the Cheyenne package?
