'58 Front fender brace or not?

I've repaired both front fenders on my 58 GMC and was getting ready to weld the fender brace tabs back on. Are the braces really necessary?

Re: '58 Front fender brace or not?

i don't run any, only a few would fit on a lowered truck any way
with a totally boxed frame i would have to make brackets for each one or modify them to fit

Re: '58 Front fender brace or not?

I've had fenders on AD trucks crack when I didn't run the braces but don't know about TF trucks having or not having that problem. My rear fenders flexed just enough to have the left one crack at about 2 oclock on the wheel well as you look at it from the side. I figure it was that little bit of vibration I got running down the road on the roads around here.

71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant.
77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Re: '58 Front fender brace or not?

I use one on the rear of the rear fender where it's not supported very well, mostly because I saw it vibrate some while towing it even on a trailer...but the trailer was rough riding. Don't use any on the front and don't see the need since they are well supported. caveat; I'm not going to drive with any load on any dirt road at any speed and they would probably get in the way of my ride height.

Re: '58 Front fender brace or not?

Done...welded them back on. Thanks for the input.

I've been making great progress on the truck over the winter. Entire chassis and drivetrain are all done, all patch panels and rust repair also. I'm sending everything out for sandblasting this week and then I'll shoot everything with epoxy primer.

I really need to post some pics on my build thread. I sure wish I could post directly from my PC instead of using Photobucket!

You can.
When you're making a post scroll down and there is a manage attachments button. When you click it a new window will pop up that has a browse button that lets you select pics from your P.C.
That's how I do all my pics.
You can do up to five just by using the button after each one you upload.
