only gear drives for these trucks that I've ever heard of were diesels.
He could be an early corvette guy who thinks this is a rare piece that someone would want.

When I was looking for mine I found 2 dump trucks that both had the mechanical tach's in them. Both were the big 427 truck motors. I went to the 3rd truck and it had the electric. All of the trucks were in the same junkyard in Charlotte NC some 15-20 years ago.

Wink Re: mech tach with cluster?????//daytona beach craigs

I wished I had bought them but I talked myself out of them. Back then money was tighter. I asked my dad about the 427 big block motor they were in back then and he said forget about them they weren't going to fit in the 1/2 ton truck.
I don't know what size truck they were because back then all I was interested in was the electric's. That yard had dozen's of old chevy dump trucks in it. It was right above the old Charlotte fair grounds on Hwy 29.
I got my whole dash for a whooping $40.00 with tach and vacum gauge. The tach is still working today. Well it would be but I have retired it.

As far as i know, mechanical tachs were diesels and went to 4k rpms. I am pretty sure that is what this is with a car dist. Still a rare find, but limited market.

Cool Re: mech tach with cluster?????//daytona beach craigs

Well as far as I know it maybe.

I do know that the trucks I saw weren't diesels and they had 427 badges on them. I wanted to get one and my dad sayed it was a big truck motor and it wouldn't fit are something to that effect. I never went back.
The tach in those trucks were just like what the corvett's had back then. The yard guy even said he had sold a couple for that reason.

Diesels don't have distributors, right? So,what's everyone's explanation of the distributor with tach drive? I believe Andy has explained this.

Thanks Special -K.

I thought I had dreamed it maybe!
I bought that dash back in 1987 or 88. I was going to mechanical maintance school training for Duke Energy in Mt Holley NC. I had been looking for awhile for a tach. A friend from work mentioned the junkyard that morning while we were talking and that afternoon I went to look. They showed me all 3 of them and I bought the one I have. I didn't want to change the distributor out. Man I should have bought all three of them. Oh well! That Tach worked fine and I never had to touch it other than mounting it and cleaning it. I took it all apart and cleaned the dirt off of it and wiped the gauge faces off. I drove home that Friday I had it installed.

The 366 and 427 Talldeck distributors-tach drive or not-will not fit in a SB or a standard deck BB. They are too long. Maybe you shoulda bought the dashes, but your dad was right about the distributors (and 4bbl Holley carbs with governors for that matter-big truck only, useless for a hot rod)

a diesel would have a gear drive tach, but obviously not off a distributor.

I just re-checked the ad and this distributor is from a SBC? Hmmm...someone should call this seller so we can all learn something...or not. I'm back logged on calls I need to make now,or I would.

I would guess it's a combo of a big truck dash with the corvette dissy! Just by the way his add says more combo's available.
It would be worth checking into for a nice setup if it's working.

Re: mech tach with cluster?????//daytona beach craigs

I was able to get one of the 'Skip White' HEI's with a tach drive for my '69 Vette off of eBay for less than $100, and it will work for big or small chevy.

Like the others have said, it looks like a diesel tach with a car tach drive distributor, which may not even give you an accurate reading when mated up.

Which brings us back around to what truck would this have come in? None that I know of. In the content of this thread we came around to realizing this would have come from a tall deck medium duty since those are the only trucks that came with this dash that aren't diesels that would have a mechanical tach drive. Would a small block medium duty have a mechanical drive tach for some reason? I've seen plenty that are electric. That's how so many swap them into their pickups.
