Re: stormy day in the south

That's the storm they are getting us all worked up over here. It's two storms and the second one tomorrow will be worst. That is some of the worst hail I have ever seen. That's a monster tornado in that first pic...dayum! 6" of hail is a whle lot of peckin' on things. I hope you all fared well

Re: stormy day in the south

I'm glad it missed you. Did you hear what level that tornado was? Looked like a 4 or 5. That was no BS baseball sized hail... bombs. I've been in a storm with an 85 mph straight line wind and it's no joke for anything in it's path. I wasn't home and it missed that. Fortunately I was in a low area and it blasted right across.

So, yesterday was a really nice day, like 59. Was right at freezing today with sleet then snow since morning. There's about 4" now and it's been a really fine snow for a hours. Another worse storm is merging right in with this one overnight and it's supposed to keep snowing till around diner time tomorrow, 5"-9" more.

I saw where Florida's East coast up into SC has tornado warnings from storm #2.

Did you hear what level tornado that was?

Re: stormy day in the south

I can't imagine getting hit in the head with something that size out of nowhere. Stay safe out there.

At my daughters 10U fast pitch game on Saturday, we could hear the hail coming from 1/2 mile away. LOUD! There wasnt any cover for the girls, so the coach had them quickly throw on their batting helmets all the while yelling "don't look up, run to your cars!".

Biggest thing I saw was about the size of a quarter.

I feel a little humbled by the meteorite that you posted there Mongo.

Re: stormy day in the south

I was going to say, I guess I'm not good at judging tornadoes by pictures. I was going by size and not sure that matters? I looked up Fujita scale and EF2 is 111-135 mph and EF3 is 135-165 mph. They gave examples of typical damage expected with each level. EF2 can tear roofs off and destroy mobile homes and EF3 can tear a full story off a house, blow trains off of tracks, lift and throw cars, and debark trees! Not good. There must be some pretty bad damage where those hit. What's interesting is EF0 can be any strength storm that creates no damage, like one that occurs in an open field. So I guess damage plays a part as well as wind speed.

Re: stormy day in the south

Thanks to the repeated (basically yearly now) hail storms that have hit my area (thankfully we were missed this time) my home insurance has doubled.

It's amazing hail can even get that large.

Re: stormy day in the south

I'm so scared of hail, when I was on that wild goose chase last summer near Nashville and that big wall cloud came up, I nearly drove into Alabama to escape it.

I hope those things didn't kill anyone or destroy their stuff.

Tim,
How you make out over that way with this storm? We were supposed to get 3-9 " and I came out this morning to sparse snow in the grass. lol

Re: stormy day in the south

Looks like 10" here. It snowed about another 1/2" overnight for a fresh coat of white where I cleared it. I saw where far Eastern MD was supposed to get about the same as here. Did you get the wind? None to speak of here the whole time. Today is supposed to be windy, like 30mph, but still as can be right now.

I am glad it missed us. Looks like Easton and west might have been the line but not seen much on it this morning. Winds have been 15-40 here for a couple weeks so it was no different yesterday or today. Leaving to go take a pole sign down now. Luckily it is only about 20' tall.

March has lived up to it's windy reputation for sure. Down by the shore I'm sure it's been worse. It's been coastal storm city this year. Biggest batch of Nor'easters I ever saw. I remember when I only heard Nor'easter as a Maine weather term

A buddy of mine works at the Ashley Furniture Factory where the "hand deep hail" photo was taken. Some of them got sent home because the hail actually smashed the roof in part of the factory. Things can get pretty bad down here sometimes.

Re: stormy day in the south

we had snow on 3/21 got about a foot give or take then 2am I was awoken to the arcing of a transformer and the power going out later I was awoken again with the sound of a tree hitting the house. We lost about three trees all pine and there was no damage luckily to the house but I will need to replace three sections of stockade fence. In addition we were without power for 17 hour or so no fatalities or injuries that I know of in my area and still 3000 people have no lights
