Re: vortec on a gen 1 small block questons.
Here are some pics of what I have been talking about, so some of you can better visualize it.
The first pic shows the thermostat bypass from the water pump boss up thru the deck surface of the block. I ran a piece of welding wire thru the passage. The next pic shows a Vortec head which is missing the corresponding hole in the deck surface of the head. This is shown with the red circle. The last pic shows a regular SB head (happens to be a TBI head) which does have the corresponding hole. This is indicated with the red arrow. I do not know if this bypass passage is necessary or makes a difference, but I believe it deserves consideration.

Considering doing this also. Vortec heads/manifold instead of motor swap.

Re: vortec on a gen 1 small block questons.
If you have your heater core hooked up you don't need to drill a bypass. If you aren't running a heater just run a bypass heater hose from your intake to your water pump and you still don't need to drill .

Re: vortec on a gen 1 small block questons.
Wow, I've been running vortecs since 1998 and I never knew about this bypass hole. Cool stuff.

Re: vortec on a gen 1 small block questons.
No need to drill just run a bypass hose from your water pump to the water jacket on the front of your intake. If you have your heater core hooked up don't worry about it. The heater serves as a bypass.
Edit, I didn't realize I had already posted once before in this thread. Last edited by garyd1961; 05-17-2019 at 09:44 PM. |
