Garage Air Conditioning

I want to add A/C to my two car garage (525 sq ft). I have two window units. One is small and one is large. Let me see what you fellas have come up with. It's hot in there and it is keeping me from working on my trucks. I sometimes wish I had my old 4 car carport back with my little 150 sq ft air conditioned shop.

I have been thinking of adding AC to my 2 car garage as well. I have 1 big door though and keep it open most of the time just for the air circulation and natural light. I would like the AC but wondering if it would really be used that much. I have several fan mounted in the garage for moving air now.

I cool a 24 x24 garage I insulated yrs ago, 1 12000-15000 BTU ac unit in the back corner 6' high on the wall, not in a window. It's under the soffit so it doesn't get wet, and I don't have to move it in the winter. Depending on exposure, It is not going be cold by any means but it knocks down the humidity if I run it 8 hrs or so, I also have a fan to circulate the air. It puts out about 5 gallons of water / condensation per day.

Thanks for the replies. Yes they do also help with humidity. I used to take breaks and go hang out in the little shop for a few and drink some ice water. Good idea about the close to the soffit! I have a block home so I would have to get out the concrete saw. I also have two ceiling fans I plan to mount out there just haven't got that done yet. I ran the wires and mounted two 4ft led lights and wow what a difference! Someone had the garage door opener wired to the light switch. (doh) I kept coming home and wondering why it would not work... Nother story...

check into the Mitsubishi mr slim split units...I have a 20x25 room on the end of my main shop with one of these installed...it'll freeze me out if I turn it down....very very quite..small outside main unit and small inside unit I have mounted about 8ft up the wall...can be owner installed although I had a ac buddy come check mine before I cranked it up.....you can also get it with heat if you want...mines just the ac version

I have a 30 x 48 with 12' walls and have a 2.5 ton Samsung mini split unit with ac & heat. works great! I can set it to come on at a certain time and it's nice when I get there. During the triple digit days, it'll cool the building off in 30-45 minutes. I did add 3"'s insulation and osb to the insulation that came with the metal building. Best investment ever. I stay in there a lot more now.

For that space in FL, you should need 12,000 to 13,000 btu of air.

Do the splits run on 120v?

mines 220v...I run it a lot...my power bill was onlylike $10-15 more than my winter bill

I agree The mini split is the way to go , they are all 2 pole 220/230/240. volt , also most are inverted to DC ,this is what makes them very efficent and come with a High EER rating why Mini split because you can order one online , you can do the install yourself . in 4 hrs you will be up and running

when sizing cooling you the norm would be 500 sq ft per ton , if you have a building that is not that tight I would use 400 sq feet per ton , 1 ton equal 12,000 British thermal units (BTUs)

you could get away with 12,000 BTU (1ton) but it will work hard somthing in the 15,000 -18,000 btu range would be better

I know a lot of local schools and dr.s offices are switching to the mini splits now. ..as opposed to one main central system

So my home A/C compressor lost one of the contacts on the compressor due to corrosion. It worked really good. We opted to go for a brand new Trane system and this baby is nice too. Any way I saved the old unit as I cannot seem to throw stuff away. Any ideas on how to utilize this thing either for a swamp cooler or pool heater or anything else? I have the inside and outside unit.

I was pondering the idea of replacing the compressor with a Sanden and repurposing this unit.
