67 gmc

I figure that the carrier has been mismatched. This is a series 3 rear end I think? Give some suggestions on direction. Thanks

I have never seen that. You are probably correct. More info would help. How long have you had the truck and how much have you driven it? What ratio is that ring gear (tooth count stamped into outer edge)? What was the reason for pulling the cover to inspect? It looks like pitting on that ring gear, so a good time to match it all up if that was the issue

It looks like old damage to me. The ring gear looks fairly new. I bet the rear end blew up a few years back and has been rebuilt. I don't see a problem. Was there a problem (noise, etc) that led you to open it up, or just a lubricant change?

My guess po changed the pinion seal sometime in the past never used a a new nut with lock tite

That is damage from the pinion biting the carrier

You could check the pinion for chipped teeth

I fixed a 10 bolt that had this happen to it 5 years latter still driving fine

Here is a a mid 90s truck 10 bolt had the pinion let go looked high and low for another diff with the same gear set
My cousin pointed out did you check the pinion teeth sure enough no damage to the pinion picked up a new nut lock tited it in checked with inch lbs torque wrench

I agree. The dimension of the carrier housing is likely the same with any series carrier. The Pinion gear got way loose and was shoved into the carrier housing...
This one may be savable also. depending on the condition of the pinion gear.
I can't really tell what's going on with the ring gear, from a photograph...

That’s pretty crazy stuff, I would have never guess that the pinion would live after that kind of contact.
