my 66 C60

I bought this about a month ago $800, from a cattle ranch in phillipsburg. They used for hauling cattle to the market, and sometimes for hauling hay.
The last time it was used was 4 years ago. When we went to look at it, after changing out the battery and cranking it over a few times, it fired right up!
It has a hi-torque 327, 4 speed, 2 speed rear, PTO and a hoist for the 18' flatbed.
The odometer shows 54000 miles, and they parked it under a shed that covered the cab. I found a picture of the hoist and flatbed in my 64 silver book, the yellow pinstriping is factory, I had no use for the cattle rack (it was pinstriped too) and the lady that sold it to me seemed interested in keeping it.
She said he father bought the truck new in '66.

It has a hydraulic clutch, and a master cylinder similar to a 60-62 1/2 ton. The m/c was bad, and might have been why they quit using it and sold it.
It toook 2 tries to get a good m/c, the first was bad upon bench bleeding, and I had to wait another week for a new reman. m/c.

I drove it home yesterday (90 miles) with no problems!

The cab is pristine, no rust anywhere, the fenders have some rust in the common area, and the hood looks like it had a shed, (or a goat) on top of it at one piont.

All I have done so far is change out the seat, and clean it up.
It looks like I will have to replace most of the underhood hoses, and the rear tires, they are all pretty dry and checked.

I am hoping to put a winch on the front of the bed, and set it up for our trailer ramps, and use it for retrieving more 60-66 trucks!

interesting, the front cab mount is mounted outboard in the old 60-62 spot that they used for the early 1/2 ton X frames....

Re: my 66 C60

See what doing 90 on bad tires will do? Maybe the GTO should of been doing 90. That's good one.

That's an awesome truck Jon

I'd say you got a good deal. I love that bed and hoist. That's strange that this '66 has some similarities to the '60-'62 light duty trucks. If you need a set of good used tires, let me know, I have connections. Although, 20" tires are getting harder to find.

the hudson was a light excuse to get this..... dad bought another 51 parts car for this one, and they are too low/wide to fit on our trailer, so as soon as I get a winch and some rear tires sorted out, that will probably be our first haul.

Way to score JonZ! That will make an excellent car hauler. Some aluminum wheels perhaps?

Re: my 66 C60

I recently purchased a similar truck. a 66 c60 lcf the one with the stubby nose. the hood is about 24" long. but my question would be where did you get your master cyl. mine is in need of the master cylinder with two different sized bores.

Re: my 66 C60

I tried all the auto parts stores in town, napa could get one for about $218.00, and oriellys got me one for $100 and a core exchange. it was a remanufactured one, ironically they had one available in an oregon warehouse... the first one I got from them started pushing fluid out the back upon bench bleeding, but the second one they got for me worked perfect.
the other auto parts stores could only find rebuild kits.
you also need to be assertive, tell them you need it for a 66 60 series (my example) and help them along in looking it up. the first lady I talked to at oriellys found it right away, and when I went back when I had the cash, the guy I delt with couldn't find it, I had to walk him through it but he finally found it.
when I was at the other stores I had to help the guys look it up in thier books, and the guy at napa kept having to be told 60 series, not 10 series

I really wonder if the m/c is any different than the 60-62 c/10-30... the core I ended up giving oriellys was off my 61 c/20, but the cylinder bores measured the same as the bores off the 66 c/60

Re: my 66 C60

It really is interesting how they held over some of the parts from the 60-62 trucks on the bigger trucks and 3/4 tons. The lower control arm cross shafts on my truck are the 60-62 style which are very expensive. Fortunately, CPP sells them for far less than anywhere else.

Re: my 66 C60

the m/c I am looking for is the one with different size bores. classic parts has the one for early small trucks but it has the same size bores.

all the mcs I had , the 61 20 series, and the 66 60, and the replacements they sent me had a large and small bore.

Re: my 66 C60

What a cool truck. I hadn’t seen it before today. Looks to be in great shape and should come in handy with the trucks and space you have available.

I’m curious – do you know what all that stuff is next to the carburetor? Looks likes some type of servo or diaphragm, a bunch of tubes that seem to have original clamps, and a couple of canisters I don’t recognize. I’m curious if part of that is something associated with the PTO or some other accessory?

Also wondering if anyone knows what the benefit is of having the thermostat bypass. I know they’re rare, but don’t understand what value they offer. And the 2nd engine picture looks interesting too – it seems to have the late 60’s oil fill pipe with the smog valve and a sealed cap, but no breathers on the valve covers. Maybe some of that pipe stuff going to the air cleaner is the breather inlet connecting to the old road draft tube outlet? It’s all very interesting because it seems pure stock and I’ve never seen an installation like this before.
