Anyone Use Safelite ?

Has anyone used Safelite Auto Glass to install a windshield in their truck? If so how much did they charge? I'm getting prices around $345.00 and I have the chrome molding, seem pricey to me?

Re: Anyone Use Safelite ?

Safelite in my area wouldn't touch it. Sounds like they only do the modern stuff.

Does that include the glass? If so, sounds about right. Even if it's a little high, if they can actually DO the job and do it well, I'd take it. But make sure they know what they're getting into.

Safelite in my area told me they don't work on anything older than like a 1990. They wouldn't do my 67

Re: Anyone Use Safelite ?

I installed my 67 windshield myself using the 1/4" rope method and with the stainless trim. My wife did the pushing from the outside while I worked the rope and lip. There is probably an instruction thread on this if you do not find a suitable glass shop or body/restoration shop with this experience.
$345 may be a good price for glass and install --- they break it --they get another.

Re: Anyone Use Safelite ?

My windshield guys do $149 and they drive Over a hundred miles to my shop to do it. They must like me, I was by their place today to pick up some wiper blades and they didn't even charge me for them. Great guys to deal with.

Re: Anyone Use Safelite ?

Those prices were the last I paid on a 05 Silverado and a 12 Silverado they told me the old trucks would be the same if I didn't want to do it.

Is that for the labor with you supplying the parts? What is their name/address/phone?

Re: Anyone Use Safelite ?

I used (Safelite) them for the '71 Cheyenne. It took them a while to get the moulding right, so I had to wait a few days. It was around $160, IIRC. They did bring in an 'old guy', who spotted the wrong moulding (which no one there could make fit), then it was no problem.

Great suggestion. See if they'll run up to Michigan for Brad

$345 is high. But, the big question is do they have the right guy for the job? Make sure they are aware of what you have...not a glue-in an monkey can do.

Re: Anyone Use Safelite ?

Find the oldest body shop in your town and have them install it . We never called any glass shop to install anything . it's really not as hard as some seem to think ? tons of 50's and 60's model cars came with stainless trim in the rubber seal and had a double bow in the glass top to bottom /side to side, Now those can be tough . I installed the glass in this Ford after 2 "glass shops" broke 3 windshields and 2 rear windows and bending 2 sets of trim trying . the young guys have just never been exposed to it like us old guys who did it daily .

What part of Michigan are you from? Glass guy around me said he'd charge $60 for install plus how ever much the parts cost. He travels so if you live in southern Michigan he'd be able to come your house.

Re: Anyone Use Safelite ?

I used Safelite to install my windshield and rear glass. They did a great job and didn't scratch any paint.

Re: Anyone Use Safelite ?

I've not heard much good about the quality of windshield safelite installs. There is a difference, but if it lives in a garage, probably fine. I personally would not go with them in a desert/sandy environment - easily crazed was the case when I lived out in CA desert. There are lots of "come to you" glass shops these days, I'd call around and ask about windshield quality and compare (if you can't get the truck to a glass shop). The bright trim on Cheyennes and Supers is a challenge for some.

Re: Anyone Use Safelite ?

I recently used safelight over the summer to replace the windshield on my 70. The manager of the area tecs ended up being the one who did the install. He was very knowledgeable and told me that he does all the installs on older vehicles. They had the windshield in stock and I just had to order the proper gasket ahead of time. I believe the cost was around 150 but in Mass windshields are covered under your insurance.

I live in Brooklyn, Michigan. My truck is a 69. There isn't a windshield in it right now & I do have all the chrome molding. Truck doors are removed as well as the interior. Let me know if he can give you a price? Thanks, Brad

Re: Anyone Use Safelite ?

No that is glass and install. They offered me rubber but I was gonna use my own, and probably just install my own when I get ready unless they are there to do more than one for me.
I use Discount Auto Glass. They have Several stores.

Re: Anyone Use Safelite ?

I won't use Safelite again. They couldn't find the right seal (one is for the chrome trim and one is without the slit for it), they struggled with it. Also they couldn't even transfer the warranty to the name of the forum member I had it done for, even though I told them on the day it was installed that I was not the owner.

Re: Anyone Use Safelite ?

Safelite is like all of the corporate glass chains. They do quick installs on late-model vehicles, and it's rare that you'll find someone who knows older vehicles. Going to a body shop that specializes in older vehicles is a good suggestion; there are also some old-timer still running independent glass shops, but in my area they want an arm and a leg.

Re: Anyone Use Safelite ?

ExperienceD installation and quality glass costs money ! Sometimes you have to pay to get them both .shopping for the "best price" when dealing with a (hopefully) permanant item like glass/seals can bite you in the butt later on .

Yeah they go in so easy with a piece of rope I can't imagine paying someone to do it.

I know I could do it , I'm just afraid of cracking it. Crack one then $345 didn't seem that bad.
