Anyone able and willing? I have one off a 78 or maybe 79 caddy 425, I want it rebuilt before I mount it to an intake, and last time I opened one of these suckers up, it never went back together.
How much would you want?

I would be glad to it for you if you were closer as I have done hundreds of them over the years. I would do it free of charge (as I am retired-or is that retarded?) but by the time you paid shipping here and back plus the kit and a float and filter, you could probably have a pro close by do it and come out cheaper. Done so many I could take one apart with my eyes closed.

I used a guy in Milford, MI zip 48381. He is retired from Rochester. He charges $150.00. I can get his phone number if you want. Mine looks really nice but I have not tried to start the engine yet so I do not know how well it works. Paul

Andy, I'm about the same as jhow66 I could do it but shipping would probably be more expensive than local repair(in fact i've got a caddy 795CFM on the bench right now).

I would offer to do them too... i dont find them that bad, and ive prolly memorized most of the pages in doug roes book

... but anyway, if time wasnt a huge factor (I started my doctoral work at Univ of Minn) i could do them too... only thing is if i needed replacement parts would have to order them as my parts stash is in storage right now... i would say in the 100-150 range and ill always be willing to trade for stuff and just put the word out that i can do a good job!!! PM me if anyone is interested....

qksilver you can buy kits at any parts store. Just take the carb # with you. The # is to the right of gas feed lever-it will look like this --704'''''''' or 1704'''''. I had mine rebuilt from Jones Fuel out in California. They did a great job. What really cost was shipping there and back but all in all it was around $215. You tell them your motor, modifications vehicle and so forth. I was very happy.

shipping would only be 5 bucks or so each way... DHL is DIRT cheap.

Here is a good website for rebuilding the Q-Jet. They din't get into replacing the throttle plate shaft bushings however. To me this is a must do on an older carb because if they are worn they will not hold a steady idle.

2nd that, they arent too bad a carb to deal with.....if you do some research. The throttle shafts arent that big a deal (a little rough idle if they are loose). I built a couple of them 10-12 yrs back......the 1 that went on my 425 Cad powered Longhorn was rebushed(Briggs & Stratton valve guides!). I went through the Goug Roe book on the Q jets, & "tweeked" it for what it was worth......spent a week pissin with the jets/needles. That old booger worked DAMN good! when I swapped the old Q jet, for a new Holley spreadbore......dammit I lost power! Go for it, If you WANT it , you can do it

just take your time.....

yes the bible as far as quad's go... mine is about wore out, but my quad confidence went way up after reading and reading and ... well you get the picture... Do a search on amazon for "Doug Roe" and/or "quadrajet" and itll come up... heres the link

Give it a try and its only 12 bucks... so 12 bucks + good read + $25 rebuild kit + vac gauge + timing light + tune time = HE** of a lot of fun!!! and good milage and pretty good reliability.... i like them better than holley or edelbrock for sure...

If your set on rebuilding yours I would find someone local with a good reputation.
BTW I have a Qjet off my 79 1ton that came with a 454. I don't know anything about it, but if it's a better one to rebuild than what you have you can have it.I cant really afford to be a member quite yet but want to contribute to someone who contributes to this awsome forum.

I just sent a diesel injector pump to MI for a rebuild for $12.Seems worth it.I`m sure there`s a good local rebuilder for your Q-Jet.The last one I had done cost $75,just bolt on and go.Prolly gone up a bit,huh?The I/P I`m sending back to the modifier to get back to specs(whatever they are),it`s like secret ingredients in mom`s potato salad.

I have had pretty good luck with BFIC Fuel Systems in Calif. I know they have rebuild kits for just about anything. They are at www.carbsonly.com
They also do rebuilds, but then again shipping may be an issue.

I`ll check K&K Automotive`s latest price in Frederick,MD.Unless the price has changed an awefull lot,it`s nowhere as expensive as what these guys are saying.The do a great job,been using them for 30+ years.They domy startersand alternators,too.They`re my 'benchwork" shop.

I would be able to do it, if you want to ship to PA. The tuning process once you put it back on the engine would require some of your time though. Setting the air door spring for the secondaries for instance. Not too hard really. I'm rebuilding the one off my '76 caddy 500 right now.

Also if you guys are looking for affordable bushing kits....Summit sells them:
part number JET-201102, price is $67. There are enough bushings included to do 8 carbs.

JHOW, I just looked at that website you posted showing what cars certain numbered carbs came from. Not trying to talk bad about the site, but I think there may be some incomplete information or flat out wrong information there that may mislead people.
