The ultimate set up

I know this question is a little like "How long is a piece of string" and will start the odd debate... but

What is the ultimate set up for a 72 Cheyenne?

What motor, what gearbox, what diff, what else?

And what should you avoid?

Personally, I would start with a bb, th400, 3.73 gears (posi of course), ps, pb, two-tone, and go from there.

This is the question that will be all over the board. I dream of a duramax with an allison transmission or a 572 dropped in it, but my truck is a weekend driver so practical is out the window. The best set up for day to day would be go with the 5.3 or 6.0 ls set ups

I used to have 3.73 ring, but im running 50 series BFG's. 295's on the rear. I was pulling 3400 rpm at 55. It was nasty, but fun. I'll tell you what, it was a corvette eater. I lost a carrier bearing so it gave me perfect excuse to change the ratio. I put a 3.42 ratio in it. It pulls about 2900 now, it's alot more managable.

I say 350, Holley carb, SM465, NP205, Dana axles...uhh, yeah, 4x4.

Add to the mix: Are you asking with the idea that it would all have been as available when new, or are you asking based on a budget, or is it "The Sky is the Limit"? Without some kind of qualifier, this is a Never-Ending Story....and I love it!

different/practical: 292 w/ fuel injection, roller cam and modern 6 speed stick

best bang for the buck: a stroker small block w/ RV cam and quadrajet

best for towing: 6.5/6.6 duramax w/ banks or roush kit and allison auto

bragging rights: modern 572 or old school based 588

eco friendly twist: LS series engine in stock form



i have a 406sbc to replace the 307 in my 72 burb c20s so i have the stroker angle covered (although the aftermarket has gone a lot more extreme). if my truck had come with a 250 and a floor shifter, a modernized 292 w/ a 6 speed (dual overdrives) would make a good upgrade for good mileage and be reasonable for towing (torque peak at 2000rpm). but a bad boy diesel would the hot ticket if i did a lot of serious towing (especially loads over 10,000 pounds) or towing in the mountains. i wanted to keep my burb more factory looking, plus i had the engine and it was a simple matter of putting a 4.10 in the rear in place of the 4.57 and picking up a replacement saginaw...one with the borg warner overdrive (got one sitting on the work bench). these trucks have beautiful styling and the chassis and brakes are easily upgraded w/out hurting the character unlike earlier generation trucks. the only real crutch for modern use is the anemic powerplants. sure you could put in a 400bb, but why not use a 454 or bigger and make it look stock on the outside. if you have the engine apart anyway, that is a good time to upgrade. there is no such thing as too much torque in a truck!

one of my C10's is a Cheyenne 400BB TH400 LWB, its a non AC truck but that will change. not sure of the rear gear though. It was a two tone, Black and that creamy white. also has bedside box, coil rear springs

pull the tranny and motor and put in a super powerful electric motor and fill the bed with batteries. How does 1500 lbs/ft torque at 5 RPM sound?

It might help if you gave us a little hint about how you were planning to use your piece of string. For example: daily driver, strip, street, cruising, show, space travel.....
