Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Greg, Ouch, that has to sting a bit realizing what happened! Step back and take a good long breath before looking to see what the damage looks like. Things do happen to our projects thru fault or no fault of our own doing.

Not quite as gut wrenching but had a bit of a situation of my own earlier this year for my '57 two door sedan. Was changing from an aluminum flex fan to a steel six blade with no room for a fan clutch. Direct drive off the water pump, 3/4'' between fan and radiator which is per specs from GM at the time. While wrenching in the tight quarters my hand slipped on the ratchet and put a hole in the original Harrison radiator! Damn it! I was getting ready for the first car show outing after the restore. Had to pull the radiator and took it into our last remaining radiator ship for a 100 mile radius. Took awhile for the repair but at least they could fix it. Was a bit antsy going back together but all was good.

Don't beat your self up about the lift, was not your own doing like my slip up, LOL. I was not too happy with myself when I dinged the radiator. Things do happen not of our choosing but take it in stride. When all is repaired and your taking a cruise in your rig the smiles per mile will be there.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Thanks guys..
I worked up enough courage to look at it..
Fortunately IH used some mighty tuff metal..
The safety bar on the lift was pushed up against the crossbar before I could kill the power...
All it did was leave a mark across the cab roof..no dent
The cowl was pushed down, I took a crowsfoot bar and bent it back up..
I got lucky ..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Greg, good to see no real damage of any real sort. Pretty sure that was a huge sigh of relief when you seen the cab roof. Sometimes one gets lucky and sometimes one doesn't. Glad you dodged that bullet and can move forward.

Yep, back in those years believe all the cars and trucks used real steel. My Sister in Law has the 58 IH that belonged to her Dad. She learned to drive a stick shift on that truck when she was growing up as did all 4 kids in the family, my wife included. Not so many people can drive sticks now days.

This is good news. An emergency kill switch, like the one gas stations and assembly lines use would be a great addition. A good lesson for us all!

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Wow, I missed the suspense between your first post yesterday and the end result, but glad to see you got off lucky. In my amateur attempts to manhandle things around working alone in my shop I've managed to create more work for myself a number of times, but fortunately not at a point where I was nearly done with the part. Can only imagine what you were thinking...

Oh crap, what a scary deal! Yep, take it as a sign it's time for a quick disconnect of some kind and a new switch.

Oh no! Another reason I'm buying a wildfire 4 post lift for my shop. I'm just flat out scared of 2 posts...

Do you need to do any paint repair or will the mark buff out?

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Guys, sorry Ive been a little out of the loop for the last week or so..
On December 30, 2021, my Dad made his trip to Heaven..
Many thanks for the support yall have shown over the yrs of this build
His medical issues just kept piling up til his body could no longer take it
He was very alert to the end...but he was ready to come home so he could go home..even though we all knew the outcome of him being unplugged and leaving the ICU, we made sure his wishes were fulfilled..

I've been blessed to have him as a part of my life..

I was also very fortunate to have a chance to tell him what happened to his truck...that alone lifted his spirits to a unbelievable high..even not being able to walk, he wanted to go work on it with me..we set the tailgate and tag on the desk at the foot of the hospice bed,so he could see it as I showed him picture after picture of all I had done..he just kept pointing at it and saying "that made it worth coming home for!!!!"
He left this old world in the way that he wanted..
At home ,surrounded by family,
and is in a much better place now..
Rest in peace Dad..

Sorry for your loss Greg. Glad your dad at least got to know what was going on with the truck. His reaction should give you all the motivation to see it thru.

Sorry to read about that passing of your father. My prayers for peace and comfort to you and your family.
Glad he left knowing his old truck was getting a renewal. Bittersweet for you I am certain but keep up the good work and finish strong!

I'm sorry for your loss, man. Reading your story made me tear up and think of my own Dad's passing. So cool that you were able give him happiness by showing him what you are doing with the truck. What a better way to leave this life, by being home with loving family.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

So sorry for your loss. I've followed this build from early on when I got here, went back when I joined and read every single page. Always been excited to see the reveal and your dad's reaction to his truck. I'm glad that even if it wasn't the way you'd planned, he got to see it and that you both shared the joy of that moment together, it makes your efforts even more special that they brought him excitement in his final hours here. Also encouraging to know that someday you'll see him again, free of his earthly pain and suffering.

I hope to see you finish this project in his memory, when you're ready. Again, so sorry for your loss and sending prayers for your entire family from up here in WV.
