So an early build 1971 would have the Z84 as the best pacakage available?

Yes, it would be a Cheyenne, but would say Custom Sport Truck on the SPID.

So in saying that ,do you mean the Supers weren't available till the 72 model year?

Re: Cheyenne Super Qusetion.

It was available in '71, but was a later addition if I recall correctly. A '71 Super emblem doesn't have the scrollwork like a '72.

I owned a 1971 Cheyenne Super but it was about 30 years ago and I can't remember exactly what the emblem looked like.

Re: Cheyenne Super Qusetion.

Another minor difference (like the glovebox emblem mentioned above) is that the 71 had a chrome tailgate handle whereas a 72 had a stainless sleeve that fit over the regular tailgate handle.
YE9 Supers were definitely available in 71. My SPID below for a 71 Cheyenne Super Custom Camper.

Re: Cheyenne Super Qusetion.

FWIW, that SPID was for a May 71 build truck, so well past halfway point of the 71 model year.
Z84 would have been the top of the heap prior to mid-year and Z84 could show up as either Custom Sport Truck or Cheyenne in the SPID wording - but same Z84 RPO. Canadian trucks had some other wordings as well when it comes to Z84/YE9, etc. Some even listed both (and I don't think that little tidbit was limited to Canadian trucks, but not certain).

Re: Cheyenne Super Qusetion.

To add to the confusion, here's one of the oddball Canadian SPIDs that used the Super terminology on the RPO description, but it was indeed a Cheyenne/CST.

The RPO is what matters and YE9s were what made a truck a Super.

AJ, do you recall what the RPO was for the CST you saw with Super badges? Some of them had BOTH the Z84 CST and YE9 Super RPOs listed and would indeed be a real Super, but I've never seen one with Z84 CST only that was an original Cheyenne Super. Lots of Super badges have been added over the last 40 years. Got any pics or stories behind the originality of the truck you're thinking of? Would be interesting if it was one you'd bought new, or you Dad perhaps, or whatever, that has a full history behind it. Thanks for sharing, there are all kinds of odd/unexplainable SPID goings on out there... Ha.

I have only seen that happen on Canadian trucks

I have never seen it on a US built truck

Re: Cheyenne Super Qusetion.

AJ, you mentioned you owned it in 2009 - is there some history on the truck that leads you to believe it was originally a Super?

Since someone along the way has added more woodgrain than even a Super came with (ash tray, etc), I’d be willing to bet that a 72 vintage woodgrain instrument cluster bezel and gb door woodgrain pan/trim were added to it at some point. But you may go waaaaay back with the truck, so that’s why I’d love to know more about it. Love the blue Super interiors.

Re: Cheyenne Super Qusetion.

I did not have it long sold it for $1500. it all looked original and aged . it had headliner and the tailgate handle trim.the ash tray decal is not original and was newer looking.most unusual thing was the glass coolant recovery bottle. only one I ever found. I cant remember much else about it except I wanted to keep it.

Without a picture of the spid
NO one will ever know

As far as I can tell that is a 71 cst truck (door panels)
That someone put a 72 super GB door oblique on

Re: Cheyenne Super Qusetion.

I should have saved the pictures. I KNOW it had a spid that matched the numbers on the truck that said custom sport truck. that was why I asked all the questions about it back in 2009. since 2009 I have learned a lot about these trucks I now have a different 1971 Cheyenne super.

I know what you mean AJ - I learned a LOT from my 71 junker Cheyenne Super. It was a cool, unique truck I also wish I'd held onto.

If it had the tailgate handle sleeve that "slips over" the handle, that's from a 72. 71 was a complete chrome handle. Only mentioning because, if a sleeve type, that's just another tidbit that adds to the 72 donor theory along with the 72 gb emblem. Just to be clear, just trying to help solve the mystery you shared - very cool truck no matter what it was! I have seen a very small handful of Cheyennes or CSTs that had "old" Super woodgrains installed and they look very, very original because most people (myself included) tend to assume that if it's worn, it's original to the truck. Hard to tell just by looking sometimes - especially when it's done this way. But if it only had the CST on the SPID (which is what I think you said somewhere above), and not a YE9 RPO (also), then it was indeed a Cheyenne/CST trim level and the other stuff was added at some point as Eric mentioned. Some have been labeled with BOTH RPOs and they are indeed Cheyenne Supers if that is the case, but the way you described it above, I'm assuming it only had a Z84 CST RPO.

EDIT: Having said all that..... I have had a 71 Cheyenne Super (with YE9 on the SPID) that had the scrollwork gb door emblem... So, I'm wondering if it was indeed an end of model year changeover or just some nondescript point near the end of 71 production when they switched over. Also possible that my emblem was swapped from a 72. Will never know... Ha. It did have the solid chrome tailgate handle though, whew...

Re: Cheyenne Super Qusetion.

Greg, sorry, not sure if I helped or hijacked The answer to your question is YES, highest trim level in early 71 was a CST/Cheyenne (Z84).

Re: Cheyenne Super Qusetion.

This is how the glove box emblem looks on my 71 Super. The truck is a 71 by the VIN but it got some 72 specific details like the doors/door panels. It is missing the SPID so I canīt tell for sure if it even is a real Super.

Here is another thread on the same subject: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=643383
