Any interest in a Double Wall top?

I'd like to trade for a single wall hardtop. I know that will be harder to keep cool in the summer, but this double wall is just too heavy. I'd guess mine to be in fair condition, and the hatch is rough. I plan to fab a hatch, so if yours is better and you want to keep it... Any takers? I'm in Houston, Tx...

Most if not all Blazer owner's would gladly trade a double for single top, the singles are highly sought after and your gonna have a hard time finding a person who will trade. But, like PT Barnum said, there's a sucker born every minute

I must have gotten lucky last week, cause I sold my double wall top for $600. Good ridence because it's a PITA to store for something I'll never use.

Wow, opposite ends of the spectrum. I'd want a double if I never plan to take it off, and maybe thst's the way I should go. If it was lighter, though, I'd take it off more! I don't suppose I could remove the innere wall, could I?

I like the way the double wall top looks on the inside better!...A top in any condition is getting really hard to come by

The double walls are pretty common here in Ca. I see them all the time for a few 100. I personally have a single wall and have looked for a nice spare but they are either waisted or way out of range of what I want to spend for a spare. It's been said the singles are more common back east because most people ditched them here in Ca because of the weather.

I've got one of each and they're both HEAVY. I hate that droop in the top layer of the double wall.

I would have guessed it to be the other way around

The singles were produced in the final year for the Blazers, hence the rarity of them. There are threads here on them and also building lifting apparatus' for them

are there any "good" threads on how to fix the sag? ....i have a perfect double wall top but the roof is horrible...maybe ill take a tonneau cover apart to fix it!

I take my top off with an engine hoist with a big bracket i made for taking the hood off by myself...pretty easy

I thought of expansion foam, but mine stays garaged and it doesn't bother me for now, and I can't see the top with 4" lift and 35's

That's how you fix the sag.........4" lift and you don't see it....
I'm in the process of refurbishing my top and hatch....I'm not concerned that it sags a little....it's just part of having a Gen1 K5......

I understand.....I have two double wall tops but they don't sag that much....just a couple of places in the center maybe ½" or less. I can see wanting to fix yours..

On a separate but relevant note....I'm working on my hatch right now too...I thought that it may be fairly easy to separate the halves but the glue they used was good stuff.....so I'm just doing some surgery on it.....it's overall in good shape just busted out where the left side latch attaches.


I cut out a cracked section to experiment on with different adhesives....


I plan on fabricating a bulkhead out of stainless steel to strengthen that area and I want an adhesive that will bond well to the SMC and stainless metal.
I tried a couple of different epoxies but ran across 3M EC 2216 epoxy that seem to be the ticket....it makes a strong but flexible bond for all different conditions...I bead blasted the stainless to rough it up and cleaned the SMC with acetone...it's curing now....

I've bent up a piece of 16 gauge stainless to test fit the angle at the bottom of the hatch....
I plan on making it about 8"-10" long in order to gain more strength.....

I'll weld the backing plate for the latch to it and then fit and weld a large flat piece to cover the curved section in the corner that I cut out....
then bond it all in and fiberglass over it.....we shall see..?

You can see the stainless piece up against the bottom in this picture....
a few degrees of bend and it will fit the contour perfectly...

Here's a picture of the stainless test piece bonded to the cut out section....the area on the left is where I tried a 5 minute epoxy....it held in that one little place where you can see a little piece of the SMC stuck to it....the rest just broke away..it did stick to the SMC piece fairly well and I didn't do anything but clean the stainless with acetone....no bead blast....I just bonded it last night and the 3M epoxy has a 7 day full cure time. I pulled on it a little and it didn't budge.....so I'm hoping in 7 days it will be permanently bonded....

Do a search on here....IIRC someone tried that with less than desirable results, I think it pushed down on the inside rather than lifting up the outside.....

No that's not how you fix the sag, just a suggestion of what I would try doing. I've been able to live with all the defects the K5's have for the last 25 yrs

What type of support is in the double wall? I know the single wall had wooden ribs. I've considered pulling them out and using metal tubing. Mine doesn't sag though so I probably won't bother.

Double wall tops often sag. Trying to repair the sag probably isn't worth the effort as opposed to getting a single wall top, adding a 4" lift if 4wd, or driving topless. Still trying to figure out the details but it looks as if single wall tops were only installed by GM at the Flint plant for part of the 72 MY and therefore limited in number.
