Tach Help??

So ive been wanting to add a tach in my truck for a while now. I was gonna buy one from autozone or napa or somewhere and mount it woth my other gauges. Do i get a mechanical one? If so how and where do u hook it up. If i get an electrical one how do u hook it up???

Im just curious to see what my trucks rpm is when im hauling stuff or driving on the highway.

Re: Tach Help??

Need more info. HEI or points? Either way, the red wire goes to a 12v source thats only on when the ignition is on (DONT hook it to your coil though), the black wire is ground, and the green wire goes to the negative side of the coil on points ignition, and on HEI it depends on the distributor but most of them have spot to hook up the tach next to the power wire. some aftermarket tachs have a white wire which is for a light, you just hook that into your dash lighting. hope that helps.

Re: Tach Help??

1) i wasn't aware of anyone that makes a mechanical tach? Can anyone provide a link.

2) For a rough guide for right now as far as installing an electrical tach, check out these links, which i, in my usual style, tried(unconscienciously) to make it as anal(detailed) as possible:

http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/sh...hp?tid/183547/

http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/sm...p?topic=8374.0

If you get the electric tach, these guys can walk you thru it (while i watch) or i could probably walk you thru it step-by-step(with intervention from others here) as i like to get anal and learn more about electricity.

It's not that hard once you do it once and understand the theory behind the wiring.

Re: Tach Help??

Mechanical tachs are old school, and require a special distributor with a gear drive to run them.

Re: Tach Help??

Mechanical tachs were used in the older Vette's and in racing applications. As mentioned above you have to have a tach drive distributor and run a drive cable (like a speedo cable) up to the tach. You really don't need a mechanical tach, just get an electric one, they're much simpler.
