New to the site and have a question

Okay so I have a 1978 Chevy C-10 short bed with a 350 and TH-350 trans. It's also the heavy half. I bought it for a buck from my grandfather 15 years ago. He passed away about 7 years ago and figured I would build it in his honer. The engine has 7,000 on the last full rebuild but because it sat I pulled it and put all new gaskets and repainted the engine. My question now is the emission stuff. I wasn't here when my buddies took off all the vacuum lines and they didn't take pictures or anything. Looking online says I need the smog pump and air induction tubes but in the Chilton it doesn't show the smog pump or the tubes till 79. My truck is a early 78. The engine also has all the emission stuff for a 79 on it besides cats. Also have the stuff is just there and doesn't do anything or even connected to anything. So next week when I go to smog my jeep I plan on asking more about it but figured I would try here first. I want very little emission stuff on the engine but I still want it legal for Cal emission.

Re: New to the site and have a question

You see the beauty of a big ten (heavy half is gmc) is that they were made to skirt emissions testing and didn't use catylitic converters or smog pumps.

Re: New to the site and have a question

Should be able to. This makes inspection easier to pass

I'm not sure on Cali smog laws but if your trucks over 6000gross it shouldn't legally have to be smogged at all. So make sure the dot has it listed as such. 1979 is when the EPA changed the law to 6500 gross I believe.

Let me look on the forum, I'm sure Somone has gone through this before. In the meantime don't do anything drastic till there's a for sure answer although I'm pretty sure it should be excluded

Re: New to the site and have a question

Trucks sold in Calif. have more emission controls.
I have a light duty 78 k20 8400 GVWR and it has a smog pump,2 charcoal canisters, egr and efe valve. A smog shop will have a list of everything your truck needs and could give you a picture of the vacuum lines.

Re: New to the site and have a question

Okay so I had to tow a 5th wheel for a local smog guy today and I asked him if I could come by this coming week and figure it out. He says but not is 100% sure because he didn't have the books but the 78 Big 10 as long as it has 2 canisters its federal. On my core support the white sticker at the top says Vehicle Emission Control International and at the very bottom in small print says U.S epa and California regulations. So I guess I will see this week

Re: New to the site and have a question

The underhood emmisions decal should list what emmisions equipment came from the factory. Top left corner below the engine code.
ie:
EGR-AIR-Catalyst

Same with the vacuum line diagram on that sticker, as it'll show any emmisions equipment that ties to the vaccuum.

Alex.

Re: New to the site and have a question

Okay so I figured it out and I need all the stuff on it besides cats. One thing I am confused on is the heat riser. My truck has never had it the whole time I owned it nor when my grandfather had it. He had it since 88 and it has the vacuum control valve but not the heat riser it self. So I guess I have to figure that out and try and get one for it if it really needs it.
