Speedometer question

The speedometer in my 84 GMC 2500 doesn't work, so I hooked the trans end to my cordless drill and turned it that way, slowly, and it works. Could it be the plastic gear in the trans that is bad? If so, how do I replace it?
Thanks

Re: Speedometer question

Pull the driven gear and take a look.
If the driven gear is chewed get a look at the drive gear on the tailshaft.
