Anybody collect old chainsaws as a hobby?

As if working on restoring my truck hasn't kept me busy enough I've gotten fairly deep into getting old saws running and restoring some here and there. At about 15 now(2 restored) and wondering if anyone else here enjoys this hobby. If there are any Homelite nuts here my two prized saws are a 770 gear drive stick shift and a 2100 special. I'm a homelite nut, but the Pioneer model RA(bottom shelf all the way to the right) is a favorite thus far. Being a small engine mechanic I work on saws everyday, but unfortunately not many old ones pass through.

Very cool !!
Seems they come in as many colors as chevy trucks
I’m digging that dark blue one on the upper shelf
It just looks 60’s retro

Re: Anybody collect old chainsaws as a hobby?

I have a couple McCullough (sp?) go kart engines that sure look like chainsaws. I don't mess with saws except for pushing the bulb and pulling the cord.
When I need service I take my saws to a small shop in Drain. The old guy who ran the place was the real deal. I bet he has a few relics stowed away...

One would think with Oregon being an industrial timber farm.

Re: Anybody collect old chainsaws as a hobby?

I used to have an old Homelite like that Darker blue one you have on the shelf...XL I believe it was. That saw was just plain nasty and mean and it would cut wood without failing or slowing down. That was many years ago up in Maine where I grew up and we used wood exclusively to heat.
I would love to have another, but have no use for it as I am now living in southern Arizona.

That is a real neat collection you have there ,, If you have not already joined this group ,the "Old Logging Pictures' is a good one to find other people on the west coast into chain saws ,,

My dad back in the 50ies used the McCullough saws as a logger ,,he then told me that they rattled apart so he went to a Pioneer then it was 40 lbs so he ended up with Home lited saws ,

As for me I didnt need a big big saw and I really liked the Super XL Home Lite with the 18 incch bar as it didnt fall forward and run the chain in the dirt when sirtting it down,, I had 24 inch bar for fallen a bit bigger trees like up to around 24 inch in diameter..owned tow of them in my time of chain saws

My Dad just gave me his old Poulan S33 a few months ago. My grandfather gave it to him. The recoil is not functioning on it and it has not been started in years but I will never get rid of it.

Me too - I collect old firewood so old chainsaws are a necessary evil.

That saw brings back some memories. Up there in Maine, my dad used to sell those Poulans new at his dealership. I remember that model specifically because of that unusual air filter.

He no longer has any cool ones like yours, but does have his fathers old Poulan 14" saw that he sold to him when it was new.

Cool collection. I took a load of scrap in last Wednesday and right on top of a dumpster was 3 Pioneers and a Homelite. Tried to buy them but they said they can't sell anything.

I remember the blue Homelites. I like that collection. Never collected them but have had some old ones. Had an old Partner for years. I bought a new Husky in '86 and that is still the one that keeps my house warm. It just keeps cutting wood. All I have to do is hang on!

TJ, did you ever see the saws I showed last fall from a thrashers & farmers show?

Re: Anybody collect old chainsaws as a hobby?

Very cool I love chainsaws and have been cutting fire wood since I was 13. I stated with a 009 stihl the went a super xl automatic homelite. There is no better sounding saw than a old homelite. Later I bought a brandnew 51 husky and still have it and it runs just as good as it ever did.

Re: Anybody collect old chainsaws as a hobby?

I used to buy a lot of chainsaws and still have a few late models , Always check out your local pawn shops for the deals , Find the manager and ask about broken equipment , anything they take in has to run when pawned but as they sit on a shelf in the back for months when it comes time for them to be sold they won't start and they go back on a shelf until they either decide to have them fixed which rarely happens or they let them go to their regular customers who buy them super cheap . anyone who can do basic repairs can have a good side job buying them up repairing and selling them on craigslist . Most if not all the time it's just a fuel line that's disintegrated from sitting with ethanol gas in it same goes for weed eaters and mowers , riding mowers, roto tillers concrete saws . Always ask about their no start equipment the real deals can be found cheap ...

I used to buy log splitters for $450.00 and they would sell in 1 day around here for $900.00 the same price the brand new ones sell for .

I have an old McCulloch with a 24" bar. Not sure how old, but has the metal handles. It starts if I hold my thumb over the carb air intake. Everyone says it needs a new carb. I tried lots of different places but could never find one.

I used to have a hobby and a few old saws back in my early days but I used them to make my way cutting Red Cedar stumps out of Washington and Idaho. Brought them roots back and supplied the burlwood market in Cali forn i a!
