Barn cats
Our nephew purchased the family farm (wife's side) and he's slowly bringing in some livestock. Went through his first round of pigs and he will be doing more. Just purchased two Angus both of which are expecting (lol), but they each came with a calf in tow too. He'll be raising egg and meat chickens, he's having a blast.
Since the barn, bunkers, milking parlor and a few out buildings haven't been in much use for quite awhile the rodents have multiplied. He found a place that captures, spays, and neuters feral cats and they will send them to you to let loose in your barns and outbuildings. I have a large stash of my truck stuff stored out there and have recently been consolidating. I was out there earlier today and there was poop and ugly urine stink. WTHeck ... Coyotes? No way they can get in here. My nephew said its probably the barn cats. Weird I thought cats always buried their poop. Guess no. I went to the dollar store and bought a bunch of red pepper chili flakes and a bunch of cayenne pepper. I sprinkled it all around my stuff and liberally where they seemed to be doing their business. I hope it works ... blech.

Re: Barn cats
Poop and pee smell probably came from the rats

Re: Barn cats
I gather it didn't stink before the cats. What about dogs? There are some bred to hunt rodents and they'll take care of the cats.

Re: Barn cats
Forget the cats they're lazy , Nothing works better than a rat terrier , They are small , fast, very smart and excellent watch dogs , great with kids and will work all day chasing rats in a barn . Mine goes everywhere I go and I've never had any breed as good as him . If you have a barn/ livestock you have rats .

Re: Barn cats
I found mine at the dog salvage yard ( the pound ) he was about a year old and after 3 months I declared him the dumbest dog ever . Then one day he clicked on and every thing I asked him to do he did and did it right ! After that day he only got better everyday , He walks past chicken like their not there , follows me anywhere I go ,Can jump into the truck with just the window open and stays put , Never barks or really makes any noise in the house and has been house trained since day one . Absolutely the best watchdog I've ever had . If I make a psst sound he's at the door barking hair standing up on his back wanting out and he makes a complete round of the house looking for whatever is out there . He hasn't had a leash on in years but when I need one there's no complaint from him . He protects Mrs Grumpy when I'm playing with her and sleeps next to her every night in his bed .Never tries to get on the furniture . I can't say enough about him And I've always had big dogs . I'm looking for another as he's getting older and I want him to help train his replacement when that day comes . He works for a living and knows his place , Thank god I don't have to pay him because I couldn't afford it !

Re: Barn cats
I can agree on the Rat terrier. My mutt is only half Rat terrier, and she kills everything from mice to rabbits. I can only imagine what a special bred hunting dog can do. Be warned though, they are a little on the hyper side.

Re: Barn cats
Everything I've read says they have an affectionate and calm nature. They are popular for service dogs in hospice, depression treatment, assisted living, and other human care jobs. They make great pets.

Re: Barn cats
UPDATE: Ive checked out in the barn where I store some of my truck stuff. Zero signs of cats or rodents after the pepper pour. Ill be going to the dollar store soon and buy some more supplies.
I wonder if I could pour this stuff in the grass where jerk face neighbors let their dogs go poo while on their walks? Or would the pepper flakes hurt the lawn?

Re: Barn cats
Watched the video with amusement. Many years ago while doing some construction at a feed mill, one of the guy's compacting a ditch broke a water line, real quick we had hundreds of rats everywhere there was dry land.
