Well I picked up the engine on Sunday and now I have it broke down and ready to go into plastic tubs. Block, crank, pistons/rods are going to the machine shop on Friday. I need to get everything checked before i make my next move. After doing a lot of reading, I think I am going to stroke the motor so this will be a slow build and lots of $$$$. I have other things I can do while I collect parts...

If you don't have 'em, start looking for all the brackets and such for the front end - I have been looking for quite some time with noooo luck. I am considering buy custom or aftermarket stuff. There is a bit of a sucking sound as the money goes... but I don't think it's as bad as it's made out to be. Mine is out of a 73 Elky SS - blocks been done (30 over), heads shaved, crank polished, Keith Black pistons, rotating assembly balanced, cam bearings etc. It's on the stand right now until I can finish the top end and get the front figured out. I did up a spreadsheet with all the stuff I want on it and the costs - I've got 1500 in it now, 1300 to finish the top end and who knows on the bracketry. On PAPER it should make 500 at the crank and I figure I'll have less than 4k in it all together. I don't think that's too bad... will be watching to see how slow you make me look. Good luck!

Luvlegs send me your spreadsheet if you do not mine. ike@whittz.com, I have been watching the mounts on eBay and plan to snag some over the holiday break from work... Yes the build is not as bad some have made me feel it was going to be. I would like to stroke it but I will wait and see what my evaluation from the machine shop looks like. I am fortunate to have a friend who ports heads and intakes so the top end does not really worry me. I just have to see if my crank can be polished etc before I spring for a stroker kit. This is suppose to be a budget build but you know how that can get out of hand... I will do what is needed to reach my goal of 500hp...

500 hp is not too hard to achieve, it's just where in the spectrum do you want to make it...
I don't have any of the fancy flow benches, dyno programs or anything so it's all built on reading and who I know (not the guys with pictures in the post office either... at least I don't think they are....

)

I am in the military and I do not have a extreme budget. I know a couple of people who can make things happen within my playground. I read a lot and I have seen some proven product as far as engines are concerned. Remember it is a air pump and getting the air in and out in the best manner is the key. Controlling the air.... I understand the science very well and you do not have to have a lot of high dollar parts to go fast or make horsepower. Putting the right parts together yeilds the results we are both probably looking for.

I haven't had great experience with the Eagle cast cranks; out-of-spec taper

I'd just be sure to check the crank completely when it arrives and if it's not in-spec, send it back for another one.

IMHO, not sure I'd spend the cash for 52 CID if the crank is good - is it cast or forged?

I know more power is always good...but given the weight distribution, etc. is it really worth it?

I used an Eagle crank and it was actually balanced quite well out of the box - didnt need nearly as much machining and my machinist said they usually do. Luck of the draw I suppose.

Scat just came out with a forged rotating assembly (steel crank) for 1300. Damn cheap

just bought a scat kit number 1-91610 cast crank 4340 i beam rods(they look pretty good) srp pistons total seal rings and bearing for just under 1400 bucks(canadian) so it would be cheaper down there. heres a link to 496 build with exact kit i got
