How to tell if my fuel pump is going out.

My wifes 01 blazer stalled out on her today. She made it home.I took it on a drive and it ran fine for a few miles then the rpm dropped to 1500 then 500 then it died.I was lucky because it broke down in front of my grand parents house. It restarted but it was popping and running rough for a minute died and wouldnt restart.I let sit for a little bit it would turn over but not start.I could hear the pump coming on.I poured some gas down the throttle body it fired rite up.I could hear the pump running.I can also hear the engine stop running for just a second and the fuel pump quits making noise. The problem is it happens so fast i cant tell if the pump is making the engine stop running or if it would be something in the ignition. How could i tell?I replaced the fuel pump 2 years/30,000 miles ago.

Re: How to tell if my fuel pump is going out.

My 2000 Suburban was acting a lot like you describe. I had to put a pressure gauge on it to diagnose it. I looked up the correct pressure for my vehicle online, and then turned the key on with my pressure gauge hooked up. I was supposed to have ~50psi and had 9.

I would check you fuel filter if you haven't already. It should be on drivers side frame rail (inside) right in front of bed. A real dirty filter can choke the supply off enough that the engine will have a hard time running. Also, if you have a 6 cylinder, you may want to try replacing the fuel pressure regulator. Approx. $44.00, but you don't have to drop the tank. If you pump is bad, unfortunately, a lot of pumps only have a one year warrenty...

Re: How to tell if my fuel pump is going out.

There is a diaphragm in the regulator and when it goes bad, it let fuel up through the regulator body and into the vacuum port. Typically you would pull the vacuum hose off you fuel regulator while the vehicle is running and hold your thumb over the hose. If you regulator is bad, fuel will come out of the hose port on the regulator. May take a while before fuel comes out, so be patient.

You have to remove the upper intake manifold on the 4.3 to get to the fuel pressure regulator...so I'm not sure if the normal troubleshooting technique would apply.

Here is a link that may help you.

Hope this helps!

My truck is a 1965 International Harvester 1 ton 4x4. It's a lot of fun!

Do you guys think its is a faulty coil or module?I don't know if a bad camshaft or crank shaft sensor would cause these problems.
