Do it yourself ceramic coating is been around for at least 30 years. It was initially available in the JC Whitney catalog. I was introduced to it in 1988. I didn't know much about it. I went down to Florida to the Zephyrhills show and placed these small bottles on the table. Along comes A woman and says I've been looking for this stuff for a long time now. And then she tells me how you apply it to your manifolds , let it dry and then you POUR gasoline on it and polish it with a copper brush! I called the factory and questioned the owner. Could this possibly be true ? His reply was yes they had sold it to another company and they had put in the JC Whitney catalog
1st step The surface has to be oil-free, this is a water-based coating. Cast iron headers, use a propane torch to bleed the oil out. If it smokes its oil. Secondly the surface should be toothy , sandblasted or ground up with 100 grit or so. Thirdly apply metal prep with zinc let it dry . Apply one good heavy coat of ceramic paying particular attention to the edges. Edge's first and work your way inward to the center. If you'd like you can put in an oven , turn the oven on set it to 400 let it cook for an hour. You can also let it air-dry for a day or two. can you buff it out with 0000 steel wool gently. Then finish it up with metal polish. This is a very durable chip resistant coating And can be used on any piece for a polish aluminum appearance is desired.
