If you got off the freeway and drove thru the actual neighborhoods, you'd be singing a different tune...lol

I've lived all over the place, New York City, Tampa, Fl., Cincinatti, OH.,outside Kansas City, MO., San Francisco. Los Angeles has more dregs of society/psychopaths per capita then any of them...

Re: well that blows. :(

I've been through east L.A. ... don't care to again... EVER!
The starter i just did before was actually on the Longhorn, which won't work on the chevy.

This has the staggared pattern, which is the large flywheel. (crawled under last night)

UPDATE (tried posting this last night, but was unable to log on)

OK, so i went out there and wanted to verify this... I'd HATE to drop 100+ bucks and be WRONG.
Hit the key again, dome light dims (indicates it is getting a load on it) and you can hear the bendix clicking out. So I got out, grabbed the belts, and tried to turn the engine over by hand. As much as I'd hate to even think of it, I've seen engines lock up for no reason and with no warning. Not often, but it happens.
I try to turn the belts... nothing.
OK, so it IS an old school big block, and I AM a wuss when it comes to upper body strength.... so a toss a 3/4 socket on a short 3/8 drive rachet, pop it on the ballancer bolt...
uh oh... it won't move.
Remove the fan, so i can actually reach it with no problem, now, I'm trying again, but putting some @ss into it....
Nothing.
I'm seeing dollar signs with wings... wondering, what the heck can I sell to bet big block replacment engine kinda money.
Try turning the bolt the other way... all it does is loosen up. (duh)
Time to grab the long breaker bar.
Either something's gonna break, or that crank is gonna turn.
One or the other, man against dead machine
Something has gotta give... and I hope it isn't my back that gives out.
I crank down on that sucker, the vain in my forehead pops out... I can feel it bulging through the skin... I feel something start to hurt in my lower back.. (kinda normal for me) I think i feel a hernia coming on...
Then I hear a metalic clank as the ballancer turns... of course, with that much force on the breaker bar, there's no stoping my noggin from smacking the engine as I fall over.
Now i have a sick feeling in my gut.
What was that noise?
I think I'm gonna puke.
Is that an anurism I feel coming on?
I grab the breaker bar off the pavement, put it on the bolt again, and it spins over easy... but not REAL easy.
My sister who was hanging on the fender being a PITA says "what was that noise?"
I dunno. I thought it was my neck I head pop as my head hit the engine.
She says "No... it came from down here" as she points to the starter.

I slowly walk to the drivers seat, reach in and put my finger on the key.
I'm feeling that sick feeling again... I wonder if I puke, how hard would it be to scrub out of new carpet?
I twist the key...

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!
The bendex had gotten jambed up in the flex plate.

Now, I'm seen in the street... lookin like a retard doin the happy dance... you know, like snoopy does.
OK, I wasn't... but i wanted to.

Starter still makes noises that it shouldn't, and I need to inspect the flex plate REAL close... but at least the engine isn't locked up.
I actually still have a headache. I dunno of it was from bashing it on the engine, or from the instant agony of picturing an engine swap with a tune up budget... but it still hurts.

Re: well that blows. :(

Sorry about the pain. Good thing it was your head and nothing important, like when you nearly neutered yourself over the tailgate.

I know that sickening, wanting to puke feeling. I thought needed a timing chain. Not too bad right? Yea, right. Nothing goes as planned. Just thinking about ... shut up eraser! shut up!

Many a starter has been installed but not aligned properly. Years later, this kind of stuff happens. Yea, check that flex plate real well.

Nice narrative! Couldn't have been told better, unless we were all standing around a cooler of cold sodas at a Saturday Show & Shine.
Glad it 'turned' out for ya. Really.

Yeah, nearly ghetto. The place where it was is ok, but down the hill is definately not the place to be.....could have been worse though. That complex is fairly surrounded by OK neighborhoods. BUt, if it was in an area like the bottoms, you would have gotten it out that night.
If something like that happens again and you need help/rescue call me.
I can help with bigger "planned" stuff to, if you need it. 110v portable MIG etc.

longhair... I'll have to keep that in mind. Thanks for the offer. And you are dead on right... if it was dead in the bottoms, I woulda done what ever it took to get it out of there... even if I had to push it!
