G M C hood emblem placement

I've got a 71 GMC and I would like to add the GMC back to the hood. Is there a template on where to drill the holes or is it a matter of measure 9 times and try to drill once? I am considering cutting off the tabs and just 3M'ing them on!

Don't have a template .... but I can take detailed pictures and measurements if you don't have one handy to look at. It'd be hard to get the hood open on my '71 without the letters to push up on after I pull the release.

The letters are off my '72 right now. I'll take pictures of the holes tonight with a ruler.

If its a chevy hood you might have to drill you might have to drill holes on the inside as well to tighten the speed nuts. Not 100% sure tho, just a fyi

Re: G M C hood emblem placement

I forgot to get pics last night with the ruler, so I took a quick pic this morning. If you need more detail (measurements, inside of hood), let me know.

If someone on here can't help you I have the hood off my 71 and could pull the letters off and you could get a template off both inner and outer of the hood I'm not to far away from you.

Re: G M C hood emblem placement

I just purchased a new hood (cowl induction) and debating on drilling the holes for the "G M C" emblems. I did purchase a new set of the 3 letters and had them on the old rusty hood. My truck a 68 I had to drill new holes underneath for the letter "M" as the mounting pegs were offset and not straight across like the original holes. I purchased the truck with no emblems on it, just the holes that I assume were factory. Is there a better way to attach these new emblems vs drilling holes both in and outside? Thanks

Re: G M C hood emblem placement

I removed my letters to do some sanding in that area, unless you are building a show vehicle I would just affix them with adhesive just like all manufacturers do today. Trying to reinstall those little speed nuts is quite difficult...

Re: G M C hood emblem placement

You should make a template and fasten with the nut. Those emblems are too big and heavy to try and use adhesive or double back tape. The back side of those emblems would have to be flat all the way across in order to have enough surface area to use tape or glue. the emblems on newer vehicles are cheap lightweight plastic. Jcfcamaro offered to sell you an exact template or you could make your own.
