Are you the trailer police? For the record 8'6" is the maximum allowed, which is why you see 99% of your car hauling enclosed trailers forsale at dealers at that dimension. Been through that with the DMV and the insurance company. I've criss crossed the country with it several times on 4,000 mile road trips from Ohio to the West coast and most all states inbetween. Been towing with it 12 years, no problem.

Hell just about everyone around here has giant RV campers they tow that make my trailer look small, I seriously doubt the citation issue or I'd see them pulled over all over the place.
I have picked up a citation in New England from an occifer that got up on the wrong side of the bed that AM. He decided to take issue with the fact that I had mirrors that measured out more than 8' across on a secondary road. I was not speeding or breaking any other laws that he mentioned or I know about. I was actually trying to be pleasant and cooperative. He was fairly to extremely abusive and my cooperation seemed to make him more and more angry.
I'm usually not frightened of folks but someone like him with a badge and a gun... that could shoot you, without being questioned too deeply, and has that kind of rage is actually scary. I try to avoid confrontations with that legally insulated violent element of society if I can. Not all of them are like that but I'm not eager to test the waters.
