Vega's 89 Rescue

I had to sell my 67 to pay a medical bill. Just killed me to do it, but when times are tough you do what you gotta do. Well things smoothed out a bit and after searching for awhile a found this 89 that needed to be rescued.

5.7 Sport
1/2 ton SB
Lowed?? My guess was 2/3 (coils/mono leafs)
Driver side window didn't work, a swift hit in the motor region got it going.
Common rust- Cab corners and right bedside wheel well

Let the cleaning begin!!

Thanks! They where the first thing to go. Picked an almost flawless factory pair from a Burb at the local pick-a-part.

Re: Vega's 89 Rescue

I decided to start with getting her to stop. Brakes where scary bad, and bounced for a country mile after a bump.

Rotors, pads and shocks all around. With a rattle can spray job I'm not to proud of but I want to get her on the road and cruise.
[IMG][/IMG]

Tons of elbow grease but finally got the color back in the hood.

Loosing some weight.

Re: Vega's 89 Rescue

Nice project truck! I would have gone the exact same route you would have... I thought you'd have to repaint that hood after the first picture, but then I saw it cleaned up and WOW! What a difference! Looking forward to seeing more..

Re: Vega's 89 Rescue

Glad you ditched the clear tails. And I can't believe there was color on that hood!

Plans for winter 2011-2012 is to pull it and trans. Without getting internal, I would like to replace all gaskets. I dont believe the motor has 291k on it. It runs strong and no smoke. Clean and paint it. I have always loved chevy orange but love black and chrome. In short, yes but simple apperance upgrades for now.

With that said......a 383 would be really shweet.

Re: Vega's 89 Rescue

My 95 suburban has 272k miles on it, original motor. I don't see any reason yet for it not making it as far as that one has. It is still as strong as when I bought it, and I have put 140k miles on it. The original transmission let go around the 230 mark...

I said all of that just to say, nice find and keep the up dates coming, and I too am glad you ditched the tail lights!

Re: Vega's 89 Rescue

Got the side molding off
[IMG][/IMG]

Then started cab corners by removing the bed bolts and tailgate.
First time attempt, I'm happy with results for a weekend project.

Fitting

All welded up, first layer of filler and I must say I so dislike sanding.

Right side.

Thanks Richie, sheet metal work certainly isn't my day job but I know I did it and I did it well enough that it's good for a long time. So I'm good with it.

That's a shame about the Sport. There's a local 71 LB that hasn't moved in years here. I've been driving past it for more than 10 years now. The rockers are now literally falling off the cab now.

Re: Vega's 89 Rescue

Well guys, I sold her a while back. I had this idea to sell and buy a 60-66. It didn't work out as I planned. This is were she was when I sold her and then a pic of what I bought.

I'm still looking for another project Chevy but i've always wanted a Jeep. It was a stock 02. I put the 2.5in lift on it then installed the new 31's on 15x8's. It's a blast to drive, but damn I miss my truck.

Re: Vega's 89 Rescue

It breaks my heart, but at least that's a decent jeep. Probably better on gas.
