72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

Someone told me they know someone who got a 72 short bed with a 454 brand new. I always thought that 402 was the bigest that came in them till 73, so did any trucks come from the factory with a 454 in 72?

maybe.............if you had the right connections they would build it.
My grandfather used to special order buicks with wild combo's. I don't see chevy being any different, COPO

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

Just El Camino's and Sprint's. If a C-10 came with a 454, it would have to be some sort of COPO. I kind of doubt it, because I would think someone would have discovered one by now. Just like all those '67-'72 big block 4X4's that didn't come from the factory but everyone says are original. I say '73 was the first year for the 454 in a truck. And I have seen '73 C-10 shortbeds with 454's in them.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

The 454 was available in 71-72 GMC 3/4 ton only as an option, it was known as the "Invader 454" which was a 270 horse unit with oval ports and low rise cast Iron intake. The 454 was also available in the 3/4 ton vans as well. The 454 was not available in a chevy untill 73.

I agree. I remember sitting in the dealership trying to buy a new black 73 swb Chevy with a 454 in it. The $4500 price was holding me back. I had a new 72 GTO as trade-in but they wouldn't give me crap for it in trade.

I forgot that I just made that all up at random, you see I have this problem I am a compulsive liar and even made up the invader 454 name. The engine code on the vin would have been "L" but since I am full of crap that is of course ficticous as well. So please excuse me for being a dumb ass, if I had a scanner I would just scan these few pages from the book where I got this info.

Wow, Lighten up farmtruck,

I agree with junkyardjohn, I would like to see the glovebox option sheet. I don't doubt that there was a chance to have a 454 in the GMC truck, just would be cool to see the sticker. That would be huge bragging rights in my opinion.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

Lumber yard I worked at had a 427 in a 69 GMC tractor. Never heard of a 454, but that doesn't mean they didn't happen. That would be an interesting sheet of paper. Maybe someone could type one up.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

Why would the VIN have an engine displacement code? C is V-8, E is Inline 6, and M is V-6... no displacement breakdown in the VIN.
I have never heard of a 454 being an RPO (regular production option) in 67 - 72 trucks, like the 400, it's just a common transplant.
I have quite a bit of factory lit here (granted, mostly chevy) that says nothing about 454. I have a huge binder stuffed with dealer ship letters, from GMC corp to the dealer, notes about certian options being introduced mid year, options being discontinued, stuff like that, and just about evey engine is mentioned... except the V-6, and no mention of 454 anywhere..
It coulda happened, but I too want to see a SPID label, or factory, dated lit, saying something about it.
I've heard ppl say "LMC has the stickers, so it musta been real".... not always the case.

Correction C=2 wheel drive, and E=V-8, and GMC had added codes for 71-72 they added the "T" designation for GMC only and they engine code option for GMC 2500 series and up. I will agree that the 454 was never available in the 1/2 ton, but it was available in the 2500 (in rare cases) but was mostly found in 3500 and up heavy duty trucks. The 454 was replaced by the tall deck motors in industrial apps in late 73. This is information out of a service manual given to me by my deceased great uncle. If I had a scanner I would provide the proper info.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

My glovebox sticker shows a 396, I thought all the glovebox stickers would show the engine C.I.D.
I had thought that the big (tons and bigger)trucks got 427's, not 454's. But, its just "what I thought", so dont put much store by it.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

glove box sticker (option sheet, spid label) DOES show CID if it is an optional engine. So the 250, wouldn't be listed on a S truck, a 307 or 283 wouldn't be listed on a E truck, and a 305 wouldn't be listed on an M truck.
The one ton wasn't avalible with the tall deck 427, nor the tall deck 366, but on the C/40 and up, they were avalible.

The book I have only covers GMC, and it shows the tall deck unavailable untill late 73.............

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

Tall deck Mark IV 366 and 427 big blocks came out in the mid-60's Chevy C-60 and larger trucks. They had 4 ring pistons and until '70 had reverse rotation gear drive cams. A few tall deck 454's were built in '79-'81 or so, again for medium duty commercial trucks. The 'Invader 454' was a regular option in '71 and later GMC Sprints (a somewhat rare El Camino clone), if you were wondering where LMC got that valve cover decal from. But as for a 454 in a '71 or '72 C-10/20/30, I have never seen one, nor have I ever seen any Chevy or GMC literature listing the 454 as an option in those trucks. That's not to say it wasn't some COPO or SEO, or maybe some dealer option. I saw a '65 C-10 with a 409 in it, and the owner had documentation that it was a authorized dealer installed option.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

i wonder if gm was screwing around with them like they did with cars. In my local chevy dealership back in 1969 they unloaded 4 really weird camaro's that i've never seen or listed. One was a black ss/427. The whole interior was bright yellow. never seen one since. one z28 was a wierd green with equally wierd looking green stripes. I've never seen the colors listed or seen any others.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

tThat would be Dealers screwing with us,not factory.Like Yenko or,more recently,SLP who bought cars from the factory and dropped their own powerplants in,one car/two motors/expensive.
The "T" prefix on GMCs and additional "C" on the VIN was started in`72 to distinguish GMC from Chevy.Up until then you couldn`t tell a Chevy from a GMC by the VIN.The "T" has nothing to do with engines. It`s "S" for 6cyl,"E" for V8,and "M" for GMC V6.As said already, that is a "cast in stone" number that stays with the vehicle no matter what gets changed, but is no more specific than configuration.Base motors within these configurations are not listed on the VIN-spec sheet because they are not options.I have been around these trucks since they were new, know alot, and love to learn what I never knew, still.GM was naming the 454 truck motor "Invader".Not saying this info came from LMC,but I see the "All Wheel Drive" front fender emblems that only came on 69/70s listed in numerous catalogues as 67-72,just to make an example. They`re not encyclopedias, they are catalogs to sell things, correct or not.I would like to see proof of the 454 coming from "factory" in any GMC light truck.
Going back to the thread starter about the factory 454 shortbed,I wonder what proof this guy has.Alot of smoke out there, don`t inhale if you`re not sure what it is.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

Just wanted to throw some data I found in my original 1972 passenger cars and 10-30 series trucks OVERHAUL MANUAL.

I found this in the carburetor ID charts...

The 454, RPO LS-5, available in the Chevelle, Monte Carlo, Caprice, Impala, Belair, Biscayne, and Corvette. I didn't know the 454 could be had in all the cars except Vega???

The 427, RPO L-43, C60 and S60 trucks only.

The 366, Base in C60 & M60, RPO L-86 in C50 & S50, which I believe is a tall deck BB.

Interesting info.

What the heck were the M and S series trucks?
