Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

M was a tandem axle, S was the school bus chassis. BTW- most of the Yenko '69 427 Camaro's were COPO cars, while the others like Baldwin-Motion were dealer installed.

I see trade-in practices haven't changed much in 34 or so years ! !

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

My dad order a 72 1/2ton stepside black with a 402/turbo 400 and 411 posi. My grandfather was a coal truck driver that drove Chev/GMC's with the 427's. My dad said he tried every way possible to work a dealer to get a 427. He said many didn't want to order the 402 combo. Because if he bailed they would have a hard time selling that truck. I would like to have a few of them today.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

You could get a 454 in a Vega...from Motion Performance [AKA Motion Baldwin]. It was costly, but I bet it was fun!!!

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

Outside of someone like Baldwin or Nickey I think GM only put them in the Chevelle/Monte Carlo SS454 and I think some of the Kingswood Wagons. The SS454 Monte is the I would like to have w ith F41 package I have passed on a few and they are now getting Expensive. I thnk something like 1300 made give or take a few

Before someone tries to correct me, I answered a question related to GMC. I know El Camino had 454 also.

You can go back to 1970 for 454 in El Camino and Sprints.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

Yes Novas were also sold with 454's by Motion, but only by special order. I've never seen one in person, but my buddy has. From the factory they were sold with 396's.

I was just pointing out that Novas were overlooked in the comment about everything but a Vega could have a 454.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

My reply was not all inclusive as to which vehicles were fitted with the 454, I was only quoting those listed in the '72 Overhaul Manual. I know they were offered from GM but, Sprint and ElCamino weren't in there for some reason????

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

I have a book called standard catalog of chevy trucks 1918 to 1995. It has a bunch of info on options and production #s. according to it from 1969 through 1972 the only year that had an option of a 454 was on 1971 trucks or it was available on el caminos. Its possible the truck could be a late 71 that was titled as a 72 truck.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

1970 Largest factory 454 produced, passenger vehicle only, the factory started down sizing after that due to the gas crunch and pollution.

The first consumer offered truck with a 454 was 1973.

I have not seen this written anywhere it is how I remember it. Keep in mind I was only six when I found this out in 1970

As for an L in the VIN this is a 350, at least in the eighties it is.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

Yeah but it was never proven. (tye 427 COPO truck)
Like I said, I have quite a bit of lit here... both factory lit, and books written since then.
No mention of a 454 in any pick up... only the Elky, and sprint clone.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

In 71 and 72, only the Caprice, Kingswood wagon, Biscayne, bel air, Monte Carlo and Chevelle had an RPO for a 454.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

No one has seen that truck up close, you can't see any COPO proof, only badges on the fenders. It may well be lagit, and honestly, I think it is, but, I'm more of a believe it when I see it, or see correct lit on it.

Re: 72 truck with a 454 from the factory?

Just to further confuse matters... A long time ago (7 years) my dad and I looked at a 71 or so, that claimed to have a LS-6. Without checking numbers we were completely sold but it did have factory looking intake with the holley 4 barrel, not Q-Jet. ok i know that means nothing, its an easy swap. but then it had a weird fender badge. it wasn't just some aftermarket looking stick on and it looked like the same cheap pot metal the real emblems are made out of. the weird badge had something to do with rats, which makes some sense. don't really remember all the details. anyone ever see something like that? we wrote it off as someones little frankestein. side point, it had "side pipes" hanging on it. but they weren't hooked up for real, the real exhaust was piped in just in front of the side pipe exit. pretty cheesy

oh... it was parked it a little town with the owner nowhere to be seen. so we couldn't pick his brain.
