Taking apart my 68 gmc the other day I found that the door latch mechanism was installed prior to painting. All other door guts appear to be added after

Seems there were some variances. My latch control screws were just black phosphate.

The door regulator screws I've encountered are all clear zinc and installed after paint. Same for the screws that secure the latch.

Most I have seen are that way. May be a gmc specific variance? Or maybe a plant specific variance?

Could be - will keep eye out for other examples. Edp coating rather than paint under the painted screws would support factory install.

Reviving this thread for some additional info. Trying to narrow down what the oil fill tube and cap should look like on a 1968 327 intake. Looking at Steve’s posts earlier in this thread it appears all examples he showed have the zinc plated screw in cap (similar to a radiator cap) on the oil fill tube. I have an unmolested 67 with a 307 at my house now and it has the slide on (mushroom style) breather cap for the oil fill. Is this a 67-68 variance? Any experts out there? Picture of the 67 below.

Interestingly enough, while I can't claim the pics are of untouched originals, the first is a 67 and has the cap like your 67 - but all the others are 68s and have the other cap as you've mentioned. (the last one is Reggie Jackson's ) Anyway, at least based on circumstantial evidence, it does appear that the oil fill cap changed between 67 and 68.

Maybe this will be more definitive. 67 (pic 1) and 68 (pic 2) truck data book images of the 10-30 327. Seems good enough proof for me that your assumption is correct

Ive found for my 66 that factory installed PCV equipped engines had the flat cap and the round 'vented' cap is for non PCV applications.

Yes. In 66 67 if you got the closed pcv option you got the twist cap to seal the system and the pcv valve would thread into the oil fill tube. In 68 closed pcv became standard and the valve moved to the valve cover and the tube would have the twist cap but no pcv valve. 67 back standard draft tube would have the vented slide on cap

I have been reading this and though I am not doing mine any where near factory correct , I have noticed some things that are not factory correct for my year truck.
One is the arm rest , mine actualy came with 67 arm rests , it’s a 68 truck ( GMC )
I also have a 69 mustang , I converted to electronic ignition and of course needed to find that infamise pink wire ? I could never find it , what I found was a red and green wire in it# place and it came that way from the factory.
I worked at Lansing mich Olds plant and I know before that line got shut down for parts shortage , they would use what they could . Shutting down a line meant money and that wasn’t going to happen. So you never know what kind of things they did to keep the line moving.

I looked through this thread to get some restoration details. There were a couple of references to the both the Flint and Tonawanda engine plants. To help those that come to the thread, do not forget that these trucks may have engines built in other plants. My engine, for example, was built at the St Catherines plant.

If yours is the same and you are having trouble finding cast dates, check the passenger side of the block below the cylinder head. Hard to see if exhaust manifolds are in place and the numbers are upside down.

This is a Lambrecht image taken before any restoration work. I thought it would be good to show some un-molested details.

Some of the details I was looking for:
Orange paint on black rubber oil filler plugs (I always thought mine had been painted by PO)
White line on vacuum lines
Partial routing on TCS
Orange paint on spark plug wire clips
Orange paint on thermostat housing
No body color on clutch linkage block off plate

Obviously there is a lot of other details.

I have reached out to the current owner for more pre-restoration photos and Ill share should I get some.
