Do all SM465 have the exact same trans-to-bellhousing bolt pattern?

Locdoc saved himself from buying an adapter for his NV4500 swap by drilling holes in his NV4500 case using the original SM465 bellhousing as a "template"
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=673588

Do all SM465 bellhousings have the same trans-to-bellhousing bolt pattern?

I have a source on a bellhousing that mated a 350 to an SM465, and I might could use it, rather than having to tear my current trans out first and use it to drill the holes.

Thanks everyone.

Yes, all small block Chevy SM465 manual bell housings have the same bolt pattern.

The only thing you have to watch out for is that there are two sizes for the front bearing retainer hole. The small (4-11/16") diameter and the 5-1/8" diameter (needed for the NV4500 transmission). It would need to be a bell housing from a truck with the SM465 manual transmission. (1968 up)

Actually it's specifics like this that help the most, thats good to know the difference. Which applications used the smaller diameter?

That'd be nice, thank you.
Didn't you used to drive a Yellow big Rig? You'd take pics of your travels sometimes and post them.

The SM420, and possibly the three speed manual transmissions, but I don't know that much about the 3 speeds.

Hey one last thing, I am using a big block in my truck, do they also use the same bolt pattern from bellhousing to trans?

Good stories man! You son is really impressive for his age. I'll let you know whenever I get the NV4500, hopefully in a couple weeks. They guy made it sound like he has a few lying around, and that I could see them all and pick my favorite. We'll see how many he has in a couple weeks. Thank you for everything.

Here's a pick of my daily, hope I don't get banned for this.

Re: Do all SM465 have the exact same trans-to-bellhousing bolt pattern?

One thing to keep in mind is the bottom two bolts that hold the bellhousing to the main case. Starting in '73 when they went to the cast aluminum bellhousing all four bolts thread into the bellhousing, prior to that the bottom two bolts went from the inside of the bellhousing and threaded into the main case.

That is correct. You can still use the later bell housings but to install the NV4500 like I did you have to drill out any hole that is threaded.

Thank you MJN and Leon, I was actually a little worried because my bellhousing on the truck is cast iron and this one is aluminum and I was afraid it wasn't the same.
Thanks for the info; I'm a little surprised that such a heavy trans was hung from an aluminum bell...
