Windshield gasket

I had Safelite auto glass install a new winshield in the burb yesterday. They had the truck for 6 plus hours and this is what the inside gasket looks like. Anyone else had this happen? The trim is also not seated correctly. I supplied a Precision gasket. The upper corners of the windshield look like they are going to leak. I did not have time to take it back today but will talk to them tomorrow.

Thats what happens when someone watches a video on youtube prior to installing a gasket and thinks the correct way is to start at the top , I hope you didn't pay anyone for such shoddy incompetent work !

I'd disagree partially with Grumpy- the best way to install these is from the top (25+ years in the glass business) but the result you see if from someone who's probably not installed very many windshields with gaskets, much less 67-72 Chevy/GMC trucks. I would insist on having someone with experience with rubber gaskets fix it or reinstall it.

My personal opinion from what I see in the pictures is that it's going to have to be pulled out to be installed correctly.

Sorry but even the video precision posts on how to install windshield gaskets is wrong , and I've been doing them for 35 years .and with 1775 posts help out the board and become a supporting member ! P>S> My son is in Dallas and I would be happy to call him and have him install it correctly for free !

Also it takes less than a hour to install the stainless trim and the windshield/gasket into a correct opening .

They did go ahead and clean the rust off the opening and seal it prior to installing the glass but I can't live with the gasket the way it is. I am going to talk to them about it tomorrow. This was an insurance claim so I have not paid them anything yet.

I agree. I was just wondering if this was a common occurence or if I was just lucky.

Unfortunately, the older our trucks get and the farther away we get from the old-timers who knew how to do this, the more common it becomes.

did the insurance company recommend the installer? if not, how much research did you do looking for a shop that had true experience with working on old trucks?

Yes this is interesting. I've done a couple with and without trim. They are tough to say the least. I'm curious about starting at the top though.

I realize that people have a great deal more experience with windshield installs than I, but the several that I have installed (following the service manual instructions) went very smoothly by installing from the bottom. Did you reuse original trim? Original trim is great as long as you use 67-70, the 71-72 is a true bear. Personally I believe the windshield will leak like a sieve based on the pictures and my experience. I would ask for a new precision gasket (yes another one) they are good but not great, being the best option does not make them the best gasket. I would get it for 67-70 and locate 67-70 trim. It sits deeper in the channel and is easier to hold in place. There is no reason for the install to take more than 1.5 hours unless using 71-72 trim and gasket.

Huh, I didn't know that 69-70/71-72 used different trim. I did a 70 Blazer once, luckily the top was off, that helped. I have a lot of trouble with the upper corners, with new rubber. Is there rubber better than others?

They used a precision gasket and the original trim.

I think you're just picky .. (kidding of course) Yeah, I'd make them re-do it as mentioned with the early trim and gasket.

Was it 72 trim and gasket? If so take them the 67-70 version and you should end up with the results you are looking for. 71-72 used a "shallow foot " and is very hard to hold in place when installing and makes for a very long day.

After reading about all the problems and issues this causes, I went with 67/70 trim and precision gasket. It is the winning combination, mine came out perfect. It will also depend on the installer.

I hate to do that but I just sent Randy (teeitup) a PM to see if he has a nice set of trim for 67-70.

Just for my clarification are you saying it's 'best' to use a 67-70 gasket for 71-72 trucks?

I used a precision gasket with early trim in my 71. I did it exactly as the precision video and it went in perfect the first time. It is not that difficult. Took about 45 minutes

If you are going to use stainless trim, use the 67-70 style, as it sets deeper in the gasket, it actually "hooks" into it and will not slip out. You need the corresponding 67-70 (for trim) gasket as well. If you are NOT using stainless trim it does not matter, the gasket will be the same for 67-72 trucks.

I also disagree with Grumpy. I have watched and followed the Precision video and installed the top first with great results, absolutely no problems and it looks perfect with trim, nothing like the original poster. I have also talked to a man that installs glass for a living and he said it could be done either way but you stand a pretty good chance of breaking the windshield if you try to put the bottom in first.
