Windshield gasket

Am considering installing one myself. Intend to remove from a 69/70 and install in 72. The 69/70 has the chrome trim. Would you recommend a new gasket? I'd like to pull the old one w/the gasket intact and then just rope it in to the 72. Any thoughts? Local glass shop charges $90 to install. May be worth it on this one to just write them the check.

I think it will be well worth the $90 to have them install it...JMHO.

I bet if they break it they won't buy it. Either way you end up buying new glass.

Just watched the video; clearly an operation that needs 2 people. Pretty much a no brainer to go to the galss shop. They did a 66 Chev truck for me and know what they're doing. Wondering if a 45 year old gasket is still pliable enough to pull and reinstall?

Safelite never got my windshield to stop leaking. They are refunding the money to my insurance company and I am going to have another shop give it a try.

On one of my 72 blazers with original trim I could never get the darn window in. It was so tight. I thought I was loosing my mind. I just took it out to change the gasket and do some touch up painting on the pinch weld where the previous owner just taped over the gasket for painting. I tried everything and every type of lubrication I could think of. I bought 3 different gaskets and broke 2 windows (one was the original one was a new one) before I gave up. I mean I gave up. I ended up parking it for 8 years with the last of my 3 windows just sitting on the pinch weld then covered it. I still haven't got around to it! I used to to do the 73-87 trucks all the time, VWs too. I never could figure out what the problem was. I have to pull out the windows in a 1970 c10 soon for painting and the gaskets are pretty bad. I definitely will buy the window from the installer this time, but this truck doesnt have trim so maybe it will be easier?( I hope)

If the gasket companies know that the newer windshield are thinner, why don't they change the gasket to accomodate the thinner glass?

Sorry, I'm on the other side of the state in Knoxville . I just did a '54 ford windshield and rear window for a man recently that he waited 3 years to try again at letting someone install his front and rear glass after going thru 3 windshields and 2 sets of original chrome that glass shops had destroyed ! I'm installing a windshield in a '79 bug convertible today for a man I did the interior on this same car and he called and said none of the local shops were interested in installing his windshield with the chrome trim so here it is back for me to install , The problem is the new installers haven't ever had to deal with these types of glass installation and just don't have a clue . I know there is always more than 1 way to skin a cat but I always

1) install the rubber onto the dry glass with NO SEALER or lube

2) then the chrome into the rubber

3)Rope the gasket starting at the bottom center and overlap the rope about 6-10 inches at the bottom center

4) measure and get a center of the glass and the window opening using masking tape to make your marks so you would have a center mark on top and bottom of both the glass and opening

5) lube the inner side of the rubber gasket and the windshield opening using silicone spray/dish detergent /windex

6) install (this is best done with 2 helpers the first few times on the outside of the truck) center the glass using your marks set the glass in place just above the lower lip and slide down so as the rubber gasket will start to seat as you slowly pull the rope 3-4 inches in each direction at a time (your helpers will be outside the truck on each side applying some light downward pressure to the top of the glass to aide the glass downwards onto the pinch weld) Again slowly pull the rope and make sure your still centered with the rubber lubed and the pinch weld lubed it should start to slowly slide into place (DON"T try to "help" the gasket onto the pinch weld by by pushing the gasket down from the inside onto the pinch weld you will be pushing the gasket off the glass and it will be much harder to get the glass back down into the gasket ) go side to side pulling the rope and you should see the glass pulling down and seating correctly as long as it was centered you should have no problem with the corners going into place ( I do these myself and use a downward slapping motion outside to aide the seating process but don't advise that to a new or first time installer unfamiliar with how much of a glancing blow a windshield can take ) ALSO DON'T LUBE THE ROPE OR THE GASKET GROOVE WHERE YOU INSTALL THE ROPE YOU WANT EXTRA TENSION ON THE ROPE TO HELP PULL THE GASKET IN .

I hope this gives some an Idea of how to go about installing one .Is it easy ? NO, Can anyone do it ? Yes, If you take your time and have help you should be able to get it done just take your time and don't be surprised if it takes more than 1 attempt ,Good luck !
