School me on the 10 Bolt

Howdy fellas. I got a "Series 2" 10 bolt in my C10 with 2.56 gears. I know that means I cannot simply purchase a "Series 3" ring gear to change out what I've got, but can I purchase a Series 3 carrier and install it in my series 2 housing to get around that?

Is the axle housing the same between the two other than the carrier?

If not maybe yall wouldn't mind pitching me a few ideas for the types of trucks to peek under at the salvage yard for a more upgradeable replacement unit.

Re: School me on the 10 Bolt

10 bolts are pretty strong axles. They been used in some pretty serious horsepower levels. But I think there is no carrier break for one, so IIRC one gear fits all carriers. This is what I've been told, don't know how true it is. I've really never messed with one, but read up on them for curiosity sake. But the housings are the same, regardless of gears, carrier, axles, etc.

Your carrier will need to match your gearset... what ratio are you wantng to use?...be a good time to upgrade to a locker as well...be much cheaper to just find another axle...what truck do you have?

If your going for over 400hp or plan to have some good tires. I personally like to add a diff support cover to help with carrier walking under hard acceleration

I was only wanting to go to something around a 3.08 or 3.23. Its in a 84 C10. I'm definitely wanting a locker

I'm at about 375hp right now, and feel its plenty. That's whats got me down this rabbit hole right now.

Re: School me on the 10 Bolt

The carrier break on the 8.5" 10 bolt is 2:73 & up and is considered a series III.With 375 HP you would not want to use the the factory Gov-lok POS.However you don't need to buy an expensive locker.I use the corporate 10 bolt clutch type rebuildable posi unit for applications like yours.I have these units and also nice used GM gear sets.Call if you want Dennis 518-528-2646
