Inner Door Insulation

So, I'm thinking about putting the foil backed Butyl sheets inside of the doors and was wondering if there is an easier way to remove the factory "insulation" that looks like it was sprayed on. It covers almost all of the inside of the door going up and down past the lower side trim mounting holes. The door shell is pretty tight and I'm not seeing how to get in there to scrap or chisel it all off. Thanks!

I find it near impossible to get off so I just spray another coat over the top of it and live with it. I don't know how much insulation it provides but it actually does a good job of sound deadening.

Re: Inner Door Insulation

Just curious, could you put the foil sheet over/on top of the insulation?

Not sure how good it would stick. Is it adhesive backed or do you use spray glue on it?

Re: Inner Door Insulation

I picked up a 36sqft box of Dynamat from a buddy who had it left over from his insulation job. So it's the Foil/Butyl peel and stick-on kind.
Problem I see with sticking it on the original is the possibility of the added weight (this stuff is heavy!)pulling parts of the original insulation away from the outer skin.
But that's just a guess?

Leon,
What do you spray over the top of the original insulation?
Thanks

I have used spray can undercoating I bought from NAPA and 3M "Body Shutz" The Body Shutz is i little easier to use in tight places but it goes on a little thinner than the spray undercoating. I figure with the factory stuff that is already there the Body Shutz would be plenty and it seems to work good. I also sprayed the whole inside of my '67 Panel Truck and the rear wheel tubs with it.

Re: Inner Door Insulation

I had the same issue with the undercoating. What I did was used the dynamat on the back of the steel interior door panels.

Re: Inner Door Insulation

I agree with others on dynomat being a good choice. It is heavy but provides a great barrier for sound/road noise.

Re: Inner Door Insulation

I got in there with a 1.5" putty knife and scraped off all the old stuff. Came off pretty easy and it doesn't cover the entire door skin so it didn't take too long. I then used Fatmat on the skin and the inner panel on the inside.

Dynamat is NOT a good sound barrier, it ONLY dampens panel vibration. If you want sound deadening you need to use a sound barrier. It is hard in these vehicles since there isn't as much room to hide a second and third layer of material in the doors. I plan on putting as much as I can behind the door card and maybe hanging/gluing some to the inside of the door, but that won't be easy
