White oak . To bad it's most likely going to get washed with the saddle paint like the original. Doing it myself only thing I didnt do was mill it. What I started with and after a few passes in the planer

I did a little research when i did mine. The oils or painted would much better for everyday use, and you can always reoil or repaint. I put 2 coats of por15 on all the edges and undersides. Then stained and used used automotive clear. But i was going for more show then being used. Turned out really good little dirty in this pic. I also used Horkeys wood and parts, but he is only 10 miles from me.

68is4me , yours is beautiful , more like show quality . My truck is going to retain its original Patina but completely rust free and I hope to do many long road trips with it like Power Tour and other long distance runs .

I know what you mean. I was going to go for the Patina look and use it more as an everyday truck but things changed. As i was doing rust repair with cab off figured i may as well do the frame, then may as well upgrade the suspension, and so the snow ball began.

I really wanted to go to the power tour this year, but we have a family vacation planned to the east coast for a Graduation and 4 kids just don't fit in the truck. But the vacation is during the power tour and maybe i will find a spot on the way and be a spectator?

I made the bed for the 70 Longhorn 4x4 using slabs from cut up power poles. Easy to work with and should be durable. Finish is a couple of coats of Danish Oil Finish. I think most of the older power poles are Cedar but I'm not 100% sure on that.

couple weeks ago, finished the new bed install in the ochre longhorn back on the farm..

took about a week start to finish, what a heap of work!

Mar-K longhorn pine board kit, non-polished SS strips and bolt kit, rubber pads..

Jamestown Distributors Total Boat products;
2 coats deep penetrating epoxy, first 25% acetone
6 coats Gleam gloss spar varnish..

brushed, rolled, sanded, repeat, repeat.......

wire wheeled, primed and painted cross members for the new wood..

anti-seized everything and all hand assembled and hand tightened with ratchet..

all done on the truck, bed lifted up on blocks by hand where required..

mom helped a bunch! quality control, held bolts down while I started hardware, etc.

I'll save all the details for another thread but turned out fairly decent I think..

now everyone is afraid to put anything in it

Wow, that turned out super nice. I wish I had gone with that treatment instead of the Old Masters Spar Varnish. I never got the glass-like finish I wanted. And after a month (at least!) of sanding and applying 8 layers of varnish, I got fed up with it and called it done.

Which sawhorses do you have there? I bought 4 of the Eastwood metal horses, and they're decent, but it looks like whatever you have, it's much quicker to adjust the leg height. The Eastwoods require removing the wing nut and bolt, adjusting the height, re-installing the wing nut and bolt. And half the time I seem to drop the wing nut when trying to get it started inside the U-shaped channel of the leg.

don't laugh but all tools came from harbor freight in lees summit..

visiting the family farm from ca, had to be quick and cheap since I have all the tools here already..

sander, sawzall, pneumatic cutoff wheels, angle grinder etc. some of which are also on the farm possibly somewhere but to save time.....

stands had quick adjustable legs and holes in the top to screw the board extensions to them..

I extended their reach with some 1x4, would use 1x6 next time, finish ran down and stuck them together and wrecked the foam pads..

I drove a series of finish nails in a pattern to space the boards so I could coat both sides same day..

and two nails in the end of each board to do the flip without touching anything..

did have to do some serious sanding between epoxy and spar varnish, that epoxy is hard stuff!

the varnish I only sanded the following day before coat 4 and I wet sanded, came out like glass..

6th coat had a little orange peel but turned out super glossy..

as I have been told by the JD tech guys and a family friend and lifetime cabinet maker, the glossier the hardier..

I made my own boards. I just finished the wife’s truck used pine. I used oak in my 65. I think for the pine all in I was around $180 with stain and sealer

I went with these: https://www.eastwood.com/rockwood-15...saw-horse.html, mostly because of the load rating. Figured I'd use them for something else later. Although the 440lb load limit of the HF stands would probably more than adequate in the future, especially with the much more easily adjustable legs.

Three and a half weeks ago on My way home from work I tried to stop when a pizza delivery driver pulled out in front of me on the hi-way. Thank God no one was hurt. Insurance sent out a guy to look at it and their estimate is for less than a local restoration shop. I,m now needing to pick a style of front to fix it ,...'72 again or go back to '67.
