Sub/Panel fuel door release

Has anyone on here hooked up a late model fuel door release on their Sub or Panel? If so, what did you get it off of, and how does it work? I know these are used on newer trucks with plastic fuel doors, but will it work on the original steel door, and do I need a spring on the mounting somewhere to "pop" it open when the cable/button is pushed or pulled?
Thanks for any info on this
