doesnt the air for the fan come from the cowl? i know at the begining of every einter i always get leaves and pine needles blowing out at me

The air for the vents comes from the cowl. Not sure about the trucks but on the cars, it also provides air to dry out the rocker panels.

The multi-pupose, environmentally-friendly vent cowl makes a good leaf compost for organic gardening, provides a safe haven for the endangered field mouse, and converts itself back to it's former state of iron oxide. What more could a tree hugger want?

Can someone explain to me how air from the cowl is used for air conditioning or heating? I thought this air was for the kick panel vents? Welding up the cowl should not remove any air available for anything else but this. What am I missing? By the way my kick panel vents are welded up.

the blower motor gets it's supply of air from the cowl...that is it's whole pourpose.

Where exactly? The box the blower motor is mounted in is sealed to the firewall right? Where is the opening to the box then? There would have to be a duct or opening in the cowl area but there isn't any that I remember.

Take your cowl off & get in there with a mirror & flashlight & you'll see. While you're in there, flush the area out with a high pressure hose or at least a garden hose,........with the vents closed !!!!!!!!!! There'a a water outlet at the very bottom inside corner of the air box. If the fenders are off you can stick your finger in there to help dislodge the crud. If it stays clogged & wet long enough, you'll eventually have rust-thru of the air box, usually thru to the inside of the cab.$$$$$$

So if i were to smooth this out i wouldnt get any air through my vents? Just makin sure

I still don't see it. The cowl supplies air to the kick panel vents so if you closed the cowl up you'd get no air to those. Like I originally stated the blower motor and heater core are sealed in a box on the forward side of the firewall. This box is sealed to the firewall. Then the interior duct and associated plumbing is on the inside. I think air must be picked up by the blower motor from a opening somewhere on the outside box or a area towards the bottom of the floor in the inside. Unfortunately I got rid of all the stock stuff as I will be going aftermarket heat and a/c and that's also why I had the kick panel vents welded up. I may be wrong but it shouldn't be hard for somebody here to go start there truck and turn the blower motor on high and figure out where the air is coming from.

ok i have just gotten different responses and am tryin to be sure that if i were to weld a peice and smooth it out that i wouldnt get air through the vents for heta or defrostter or anything, thanks

I have one welded up but still has the wiper holes. If your keeping factory heat/a/c it might be a problem w/airflow to the kick panels. If your switching to aftermarket air like I am, it won't matter.

I'm trying to remember what the stock parts look like. Is there a 2" or so round duct in the bottom of the dash, up top on both outboard sides? If there is then that's where the blower motor pulls the air from the cowl. Why can't you go to the box on the sides of the cab and put a couple holes there? If you open your door and look forward at about the middle of the door frame there is a box. The kick panel vents are to the inside of this. Since I had the stock stuff welded shut I was just going to open a couple holes on the side or bottom to ensure water and crap doesn't build up and starta rust factory. I don't see why you couldn't do the same thing. It would still be pulling air from the cowl. Just from down lower from the box as opposed to the top of the cowl.
