88 GMC Jimmy "Jimbo"

I bought this thing when I was a senior in high school. I was 17, Im 25 now. I tradded a 87 mazda b2600 4x4 for it. I paid $400 for the mazda and the jimmy was clean so I thought I did good. The owner of the Jimmy thought it was knocking. Turned out to be loose torque convertor bolts. Fixed it in his driveway and drove it for years. I ran it hot my last year of college and parked if for a year or so. I ended up buying a wrecked 92 s10 and swapped the 4.3 out of it into the jimmy and drove it for a little while and just parked it because I didnt need it and couldnt bring myself to sell it after all the good and bad memories Ive had with the old thing. So last year I bought a 92 camaro off ebay for $420 bux. It had the tbi 305 swapped out for a TBI 350 out of a truck. I sold a few parts off of it and the interior for almost what I payed for the whole car. The plan was and is to swap the 350/700r4 out of the camaro into the jimmy leaving it fuel injected and dependable. Well I'm married now and things are settling down so I figured I may as well get started... SO for now all I am going to do is give you before pics when I first bought it and current pics as it sits covered in mold. As I do work I will update this thread. Dont be surprised if its slow going! When I got it , it was lowed via removal of the front springs completely!, ridding on bump stops only, rode awefull, looked cool. Rear was lowered using a 4in and 2in block stacked. It would scape reflectors.. I drove it like that for a while and then raised it. It went though a few sets of old school wheels before I stuck these newer s10 wheels on it. I would like to lower it the right way after the v8 swap. Dont pic on the garfield on the tailgate. It was owned by a girl at couple owners ago and she painted it in the tailgate. Its dated 90 something.

I wish I could have hung onto my old projects. I can't wait to see the progress on this.

Re: 88 GMC Jimmy "Jimbo"

Little progress today. Broke the hood cable so that will have to be fixed now. Stuck a battery and 4 gallons of gas in jimmy today and cranked it up. It ran ok but idle was unstable and would just stall for no reason but crank right back up... Quick check of everything and couldnt find anything wrong.. Found crusty connection at PCM, cleaned conectors and put some die electric grease in there and it runs great now.. Idles is a little high. I need to adjust it down. I think I am going to get it going with the 6cyl again and iron out everything before I swap the v8 in. The cruise, and wippers dont work and ignition lock cyl is bad. The cruise never worked and I traced it down to the switch in the column along time ago I think. I have no idea why the wippers dont work they did before I parked it last. I have a nice tight column with good lock cyl out of the s10 I parted along time ago I think I will just swap in and go from there. I am going to try and CLEAN the hell out of it this week and take some more pics... I also found the alternator has almost rubbed a hole in the upper rad hose. So I am going to get a new hose and flush the coolant sometime this week. It could also use a new upper and lower radiator shroud and I cant find the air cleaner.. So I will try and get replacements for those. I DID however run across the original box the billet grill came in, inside I found the mint original GMC grill that I think I will reinstall and I also found a NICE center console to replace the busted one in the jimmy.. Anywho its a little update but a update none the less.

Re: 88 GMC Jimmy "Jimbo"

Washed some of the mold off. Bought some new rad hoses and a brand new shroud for the fan. Gonna tune it up this weekend and clean the interior and see what I have.... ALREADY thinking about dropping it off at the body shop for some fresh paint. thinking about all black or factory black and silver. The windshield visor, roof rack and garfield will be a thing of the past.

Re: 88 GMC Jimmy "Jimbo"

I have automotive ADD..... With me trying to build about 4000 different vehicles. I cant stay focused on one thing lol. SO VERY little has happened to the jimbo.. I DID get new GM rad. hoses and NOS upper and lower radiator shrouds for it. With not having a shop, daylight savings time cuts my work time WAY down. Leaving only weekends to mess with my cars.
