Tech Question: 700R4 Behind 402BB

I put the thread on the Truck Tech board, but that board seems to have been abandoned, so I thought I'd link to it from here.

Re: Tech Question: 700R4 Behind 402BB

I dont think a 700r4 will handle the BB torque, you would need a 4l80 for the 4speed or 400 if a 3speed is needed.

Re: Tech Question: 700R4 Behind 402BB

Ive got a 72 that came with a 402 and the rear gears are 3.54 in mine. No the factory never put the 700r4 behind a bbc or a th350 cause they were not built to handle the torque of the bbc. Many have tried this with "built" 700s but they will not last.

Re: Tech Question: 700R4 Behind 402BB

I have one in my burb, behind a 454. Has lasted a few a few thousand miles so far (got it for a steal) with no issues, but I drive like the little old lady from Pasadena so......
As soon as it fails, it will give me an excuse to get away from these damn slush box pieces of #$#$ and drop in a 6 speed manual.....

Im sure you want the OD but the th400 is an inexpensive way to go. They are on every craigslist.

Re: Tech Question: 700R4 Behind 402BB

So there are a lot of people out there saying a 700R4 will not hold up to a BB. Crap, now that calls for more $$$ for me cough up, but I need all the advice I can get from you guys.

So I'm thinking of putting a '77 454 in my '85 4wd that has a 700R4. I've seen a few replys on here calling for a 4l80. I'm taking it that this is a tranny with overdrive (which I would like to keep). So how much $ does one of these run? Is it a straight out swap to where no re-engineering has to take place to install one in place of the 700R4?

Man, should I just build a 383 stroker and sell the 454? Will the 700R4 hold up to the 383? MMMMM...............too much to think about.......

All jokes aside though, any thoughts of yours is very much needed and appreciated.

Well, the 4L80-E is a computer controlled tranny, hence the "E", so you have to have the control unit.

After all I've been reading on this subject, I think my best bet is to save up the $2850 and just get the GV O/UD. I've already got a good THM400 in my truck, i.e., the most durable tranny GM's ever produced for car/light truck application. Why fix what ain't broke, right? I should just improve on it.

Dang, sounds like the 4l80-E is out of the picture.

Re: Tech Question: 700R4 Behind 402BB

$2800? you can get a nice rebuilt 4l80e for around $1K IIRC and about 300 for the controller.

Okay, that sounds like a viable option, but, will it go on my 72 with 402BB, and if so, how much mod would it take?

Re: Tech Question: 700R4 Behind 402BB

A nasty 383 will also tear a 700r4 to pieces. They can be built to handle a bunch of power but its very very expensive and still they are only moderately reliable at best. If your making any decent power the 4l80e is the way to go. It costs a little more up front but you get what you pay for.

Re: Tech Question: 700R4 Behind 402BB

depends what do you do with the truck? a 402 isnt exactly a pro street monster engine in stock form. Anyway a 700r4 can live a long happy life behind a bb without any modification.

Re: Tech Question: 700R4 Behind 402BB

Don't kid yourself about a properly built 700R4 for 1K, 1500.00 installed (who needs a controller?). Corvette servos and extra plates, building a TH350/400's or 4-5 speeds are just putting stints in your heart, read this at Mad Dog transmissions, this stuff breaks rear ends, mine is going in this month:
