1954 Chevrolet 3100 tyres
Hi,
I am messaging from the UK about my Chevrolet truck. I have just been into a tyre shop to replace my spare tyre and have been told that my current tyres are not road legal in the UK as they are not speed rated(luckily I have not driven it on the road yet. Does anyone have any advise as to what tyres to put on my truck? Also does anyone know of any classic Chevrolet car clubs in the Devon area in the UK? Thanks in advance, Tom Posted via Mobile Device |

What tires do you have now? Are they bias ply, what size, etc?

Maybe you'll find a car club here that'll work for you.

Re: 1954 Chevrolet 3100 tyres
Tom,
Welcome to the forum! I just looked at the tires on my truck - same size as yours - and then thought mine weren't speed rated either. I had to go looking for this chart and info to realize my tires are speed rated - just not in the manner I was expecting. My tires have a smaller size listing just outside the rim followed by 115/112R which is the load rating and speed rating. This size tire has two load ratings because it can be used in single or dual wheel applications. The R is the speed rating. If your tires don't have this type of rating they are old enough they should be replaced for safety's sake before you drive your truck. Thanks to Tire Rack for the following info: Beginning in 1991, the speed symbol denoting a fixed maximum speed capability of new tires must be shown only in the load rating portion of the tire's service description, such as 225/50R16 89S. The most common tire speed rating symbols, maximum speeds and typical applications are shown below: L 75 mph 120 km/h Off-Road & Light Truck Tires M 81 mph 130 km/h Temporary Spare Tires N 87 mph 140km/h P 93 mph 150 km/h Q 99 mph 160 km/h Studless & Studdable Winter Tires R 106 mph 170 km/h H.D. Light Truck Tires S 112 mph 180 km/h Family Sedans & Vans T 118 mph 190 km/h Family Sedans & Vans U 124 mph 200 km/h H 130 mph 210 km/h Sport Sedans & Coupes V 149 mph 240 km/h Sport Sedans, Coupes & Sports Cars

Re: 1954 Chevrolet 3100 tyres
It sounds like the problem is the inspector. I don't believe there is a radial tires made in the last couple-few decades that doesn't have a speed rating.
