blazer hatch lock removal

I need to remove the handle / lock from my blazer hatch to have a key made. Anyone have an idea the difficulty or pitfalls involved? The ignition and door key are the same, were orignal hatch keys diffrent? I had hoped I would be able to give a part # to the local chevy dealer for a new key, but the part counter said thats not possible. A local locksmith will make me a key for $20. if I remove the handle. Any ideas? Thanks

I believe you remove the plate from the back of the hatch, and there should be two bolts holding the latch on. Originally the hatches were keyed the same as the ignition and doors.

I think the handle is kind of a press fit scenario. Mine wouldn't come apart. Had to take to a locksmith, he took an impression and made me keys.

I was thinking there was a locking split ring also, I thought it had
to be removed before it would come loose, I could be wrong.

Re: blazer hatch lock removal

When I had a key made for mine I just took the t-handle off the hatch and took it to the key man.. To remove the hatch handle you need to remove the access plate on the bottom of the hatch to get at the pins that hold the hatch rods to the handle. Once you remove those you can remove the 2 flat blade screws from the t-handle it sdelf and the whole thing should slide out...

Re: blazer hatch lock removal

I concur with others advise, its a quick and easy R/R. You might be suprised when getting key made that it matches your ignition/doors!! The one I did on 72 the locksmith used a garage door/gas cap type key and on a whim I tried my ignition key and it fit like a dream. Locksmith lubed and cleaned up lock which is why original key failed when I bought truck. Needless to say I scraped the aftermarket keys and used good copies of the ignition key.

Still have sellers remorse on that truck but its still lurking here under another board members signature. Thats a truck on its 3rd board member.
