Re: 1987 R10...aka Belushi

I vacuumed down the a/c in the truck to check for leaks etc. it just didn't blow very cold. I only recovered about 14 oz of Freon. So I pulled the vacuum and let it sit for 2 hours with no leak, so I put 3.2 lbs of 134a back in it and now it's ice cold!!!

Belushi was already 134. So, I guess when they did the motor they did the retrofit for 134 at the same time. Everything but the actual compressor looks new.

Re: 1987 R10...aka Belushi

I got a wild hair and decided I was going to get these old Boss 338’s I had on this truck. These are 1st gen 338’s, so they don’t like HD brakes, which I have. So I did some machine work on the rotor hats/hubs so they’d fit and here’s how she sits this morning. Pardon the filth, but I finished this up at Dark-Thirty last night, so he needs a bath.

I drove it the 40 miles to work this morning, with the windows up and the a/c on and it was wonderful. I could here the radio without issue and I swear, there’s no vent window wind noise at ALL. It was amazing. This thing just keeps getting better.

Re: 1987 R10...aka Belushi

I’ve also been jawing back and forth with my buddy Chad (aka CC69Rat) about the Silverado trim and I think that’ll be next. Also maybe a two-tone scheme?

I love the Two-Tones, that would look awesome!
BTW Carter, remember when we were discussing waiting on our replacement seat covers, because of damage. Well mine finally showed up today! 😳

Those wheels look great on the truck. Nice work on getting your AC sorted out. It's always cool when these old trucks respond well to a little bit of upkeep and maintenance.

I think so too, that pic is the same truck I posted a couple of posts back. Amazing how much the change in angle affects the grey/Silver appearance

Thanks! Yeah, I’m really pleased with this truck and how well everything seems to have been maintained.

Like the others, I can't deny the eye grabbing ability of that two-tone, but I do really like the clean simplicity of your truck the way it is. I wouldn't hesitate at all to run it like it is forever. Especially with the condition of the existing paint.

I’m leaning your way too. The paint on it is good enough for a driver, which this is. If I decide to two-tone it, it’ll get a complete repaint with a bit different blue...not a lot different, but certainly different with a darker grey in the center to match the wheel centers.

I drove it to a car show Saturday night and had a blast answering questions about it. And I drove it to work again today and it’s a pleasure to drive.

Re: 1987 R10...aka Belushi

I had a belt ‘chirp’ while the engine was cold, so when I got home tonight I checked all the new belts and sure enough, the a/c belt was a tad loose. Tighten it up a bit and all should be well.

I also got an intake ‘elbow’ from a board member on here, but it turned out to be the wrong application for the ‘87. He sent me the rest of the ‘89 parts and I got it installed, but I don’t think I’ll keep it. I really want the correct one for the ‘87.

I finally got the correct elbow and fitted it. One more item checked off the list! I know it looks the same, but this one fits correctly.

Thanks Greg!

That nitpicky is relatively common for me. If I know it’s wrong, it’ll drive me nutz. As I get older, it gets worse too.

Re: 1987 R10...aka Belushi

Nothing really happening here anymore, but I did upgrade/repair my sliding back glass lock. The one in the truck when I got it was broken so I bought the standard plastic Dorman replacement part from the local parts store. Went on fine and seemed to fit the bill, but I was out driving the truck last Sunday and noticed in the rearview mirror that the window was slightly open. Somehow the POS Dorman piece had broken...I never touched it after I installed it and it broke. So, I went in search of a metal replacement. Didn’t take long and I found one. So here are some pics and it does seem to be a much better option.
