Re: factory grease pencil marks?

. . . .

My 70 C-10 has them . . . a "635" job number and the letter "B".

( I've always assumed that the "B" was for the Baltimore Plant )

There "WAS" also an "AIR" on the inside of the right fender.

( The truck does have factory air, so that's probably what that meant )

. . . .

Probably not. Assuming it was built in Baltimore it was already "in" Baltimore and there would not be any reason to tell the assembly line workers that. One would hope they already knew where they were...

If that's the original color my guess would be the "B" stands for "Blue".

Ill take some picks of what I can. If I'm careful, maybe I can strip the paint and get to the mustard writing.

It WAS built in Baltimore ( the "B" is in the serial number ).

I thought the same thing about it already being in Baltimore, but it was already BLUE when it was written on the firewall too !!! LOL ( that is the original paint on the firewall ) We'll probably never know for sure.

Had this under the green paint. Matched all the grease marks all over the truck. Looks to be painted on with a brush. Built in Janesville.. 68 cab

Bruce,

here is a 72 Sierra Grande with paint color on the firewall. it looks like it may have been put on before the paint and again in white grease after paint? I have another example with GMC noted from my 69.

Re: factory grease pencil marks?

Also just curious, is that stamp on the firewall edge on 72 only? My 68 don't have it. Or plant specific maybe..

Any body know what the "4T" on the Sierra Grande firewall stands for? My Cheyenne Super has the same 4T.

Re: factory grease pencil marks?

I have seen 4T in that location on all AC trucks. I have seen an S in the same location on a few non AC trucks. I assume it is AC but have not figured what the T stands for figuring the 4 is four season.

Thanks Jim, I appreciate you doing that, No rush, and please don't strip paint on my account. Just the 215 stamp and the 215 grease markings are a score for me.

Yes, that's right. Different info the second time. Those markings are kinda a heads up for the workers down the line. So they can tell what's coming next.

John, Those are great shots of both trucks. Thank you so much for posting those. That's the first time I have seen photos of the double layer ones on a truck, And the full paint colors written out. That is very cool. Really happy to have those. Thank You. Any chance you could send the large size files to my Email?

sboris, So far I have only seen those (stamped into the radius of the firewall)on the Freemont Trucks. I have several 72's and 1 on a 1971. I'm curious to see how many different years can be found.

Re: factory grease pencil marks?

Here are some on a 71 Cheyenne I bought. The first is on the back of the header panel of the bed. The second pic shows a number that is on the lower cowl area behind the drivers fender. This truck is a St. Louis truck.

No problem Bruce, I'm stripping the cab to bare metal anyway.

Re: factory grease pencil marks?

Has anyone ever seen the front of a bed panel written on with grease pencil ? I have a 67 bed that was written on it happy new year from the spray booth boys 11/31/66 . couldn't believe it when I seen it so we left it on there and sprayed over top of it you can still see it . I wish I would've taken pictures of it but I was young when I restored it that was 1990. Has anyone ever seen this before?

That would be great! Thank you, Don't know why a trim level code would be written on the front of a bed, But there must be a good reason. I have seen several beds with codes and such, on the front panel facing the back of the cab.

Front bed panels get marks on them a lot. Usually codes. Your hand written note is rare, but it did happen. The workers had fun the same ways we all do. The "Happy New Year form the spray booth boys" is awesome. That is a very cool memento to have/know is on your truck. Very cool!! If you ever pop the bed off, I sure would appreciate, having a picture of it. That is so cool. BTW totally against protocol. It would be considered graffiti, by management, back in the day. Any chance this truck was built at Fremont? The painters at Freemont signed lot's of trucks. Here is a thread with some of the Freemont painters Initials in it. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=607102

LOL - that was my first thought as well (ie, built in Fremont).
