69 c10 to 71/72 Discs and 5 Bolt - Spindle Question

Reposting here to get more exposure...

Ok, so I originally ordered the Brothers front disc conversion kit and after them saying it would be 4-8 weeks I cancelled my order.

I then found a local guy selling front and rear disc/drum swap for a great price! But now have to figure out how to make it all work on my truck.

So what I got from him was:

Front- Rotors, callipers (with hoses), brand new pads and dust shields, stock height spindles

Rear - Drums complete - no axles

Brand new brake booster, master cylinder and prop valve. All for about $150.

So my plan was to buy the CPP modular drop spindles for a 71/72 disc brake truck and that should bolt all together with what I have bought, with the exception of the tie rods right? I would need the newer style outers and then use the 69/70 outers on the inside with a conversion sleeve or something? I also read about the brake hoses, and how they mount to the front of the arms vs rear like the 69/70, so would need a longer set of those I'm assuming.

My biggest question is, can I get a disc conversion drop spindle for a 69/70 and use the 71/72 parts? That should make the tie rods work better, and also allow the use of the 73+ balljoints right? Would this work? And do they sell these in a 5 bolt for the 69/70?

What is the best plan of attack for this conversion? I know it would have been easier to just order the full conversion kits, but the price I got this for (also shipping and conversion to Canada right now sucks!) along with the rear 5 bolt drums made it hard to pass up.

Next question regarding the rear 5 bolt swap? All I should need is the 5 bolt axles right? I know they made them in different lengths but not sure what length I'd need? Assuming 71/72 axles? Everything else should bolt up correctly for a 69-72 trailing arm rear end?

Thanks a ton!

Yes.
Make your life easy and buy 63-70 drop spindles.
Direct bolt on.

The 71/72 brakes will bolt right on the 63-70 spindles? Thats what I was worried about not working.

ok perfect! I thought I'd have to get conversion spindles or something.

So 63-70 2.5" Modular drop spindles, the 71/72 rotors/callipers/dust shields, and then I can just buy new components for 67-70 for balljoints and tie rods etc.

That sound right? Why does that sound too easy

Sounds good.
You will need a different master cylinder.
71-72 style with a stock or aftermarket proportioning valve.

Perfect! Thanks for the reply! I grabbed the master and prop valve off the guy who I bought the brakes off of. So sounds like I should have it all!

Thanks again!

Just to confirm, do you know if the caliper brackets will be needed for the CPP modular spindles? Or should I just get the normal drop spindles and not the modular design?

I will be bagging this truck in the winter so liked the idea of the modular design creating more wheel space (for going lower) but not sure if they are needed. I don't have wheels yet and can order based on backspacing for whatever setup I have at the time.

Re: 69 c10 to 71/72 Discs and 5 Bolt - Spindle Question

CPP sells the modular design that requires an add on bracket AND they sell the version with the cast in caliper bracket.
That choice is yours.
If you do order CPP products I suggest
using Summit Racing as a reliable source.
Some people have had trouble getting CPP parts due to the virus shut down orders in CA.
CALL Summit Racing and talk to a tech.

I recently tried to order some rear shock relocator brackets and the ship date was constantly changing to a later date.
The tech at Summit Racing said they were having trouble getting products from CPP.
That may be over now.

Thanks for all the help Keith!

I have them sitting in my cart (for the past two weeks) at Summit now. Just haven't pulled the trigger.

Since you are the suspension guru and like the low altitude like myself... Do you see the benefit of the modular design for the gained space? Im not sure if I'd miss it or not since I haven't picked the wheels yet. And I really like 15" steelies and such, doubt I care about the wider track.

Re: 69 c10 to 71/72 Discs and 5 Bolt - Spindle Question

CPP modular design would probably be my choice if I was going with BIG brake rotors and calipers.
For 15” wheels use Western Chassis, mcGaughys, or Belltech.
Keep the backspacing on 15” wheels up front, less than 4” and you will be fine.

Noticed you didn't say CPP for normal drop spindles.. Is there a reason? I read a review on the McGaughys saying they wouldn't accept the stock dust shield plates?

Re: 69 c10 to 71/72 Discs and 5 Bolt - Spindle Question

I have personal reasons for not recommending CPP.
Years ago they got me for $100. I never got the refund.
So I don’t promote them.
Look at their “customer service” reviews. Not very good.

I’d rather buy spindles and other parts from companies like Pro Performance in AZ.
Those guys live and breath these trucks.

CPP just sells parts.

Ya I’ve read the reviews on CPP, which is actually why I went to Summit to grab them. I was just wondering if you had a complaint for quality on the spindles.

I’ve talked to Travis at AZPro a couple times about misc things, and will be buying a couple things from them that they sell that I’m interested in. Great guys for sure.
