Old car magazines

What do you do with your old magazines? Do you keep them or give them away? I am not talking about very old or possibly collectable one. I am talking about 15 or so years old ones.
I have boxes of them (classic trucks, super chevy, hotrods,..)which I have hauled around few times when we moved few times but now I am thinking about getting rid of them but I really feel bad. They take a lot of space and just sitting in the box. Besides, they are very heavy!

Re: Old car magazines

Giving them away is always my first choice. Especially to kids to get them interested in cars. I gave some to my grandson. I hate to throw them out but I have. I need the space more than a box of magazines that I most likely will never look at again. And I don't find the newer ones all that interesting.

Re: Old car magazines

I collected all of the same, custom classic trucks, classic trucks, super chevy, etc. I wanted to donate them too, but finally got tired of the space that they took up and recently just threw them all in a dumpster. Sure, some of the content was cool but many of the advertisers are no longer in business.

Re: Old car magazines

I've not thrown away a car mag since before 1969. I've always subscribed to several at the same time, until this year. Paper mags are going away. It seems a shame to dump all these pictorial treasures but the time is coming when I have to do something with them too.

Re: Old car magazines

I faced this same problem a few years ago with my collection of aviation magazines. My end solution was to scan through them while watching some TV show that didn't require full attention. Keep the few pages of stuff per magazine that might be useful for current or future projects. Toss/recycle the rest. I went from 7 boxes to about 2 inches of loose pages. It took several months but when I was finished, it was really nice not getting that feeling of frustration every time I saw the 7 full boxes of old magazines. A bonus came a couple of years later when I moved and didn't have 7 boxes of old aviation magazines to deal with.

Re: Old car magazines

I save them a lot. But often end up taking a deep breath and let some go. Especially ones not in very good condition. I have clipped pictures out of some and made collages and have manila envelopes filled with many clipped out pictures. I save too much or I would have them all, still. I lost a bunch in boxes to rat wizz (and the other stuff). They were stashed in the upper floor of my little barn where my neighbors behind me keep their poorly managed refuse on the other side of the fence. Bummed me out. I had a foot locker full that they ruined, too. I also save select old catalogs. I have a file cabinet with many old car media.

If nothing else, make a collage!

I was thinking if I am going to get rid of them, donate them to library (they have a section they sell used books and magazines) or Boys&Girls club, if they take them.

If I come across some, you can have them for free, just pay the shipping cost.

Re: Old car magazines

I have been slowly getting rid of all my old stuff that I thought would be worth something someday. I still get a few monthly publications and when I’m done with those I bring them to the car show and give them out to my friends.

Re: Old car magazines

I have my Dad's magazines (Hot Rod, Cycle World, etc.) going back to the 50's as well as mine from the 80's on. Several years ago I went through them all (several hundred) and created an master index so that I could find particular topics easily. They are now organized in totes. Even after all that work, I've not touched them since. Maybe when I retire? Like Paul, I'd be more than glad to give them to some gearhead kid but I just don't know any.

That's a great idea if they will take them.

If one of those magazines can in inspire the next generation of hot rodders that would be great.

And it would teach them a valuable lesson on spending way too much money on a car.

Re: Old car magazines

I have the same problem ... a friend of ours was moving & he gave us about 10 big totes full old car mags. I 've gone through them & kept everything from oldest ('61) through 1979 & a few from 80s, but still have 4 totes full from 80' through probably '99. I hate to just throw them away but tired of making space for these totes & will probably never look through them.

Best idea!

I stopped buying truck magazines at some point. Before completely stopping, I had slowed down to only buying ones with with a truck I was particularly interested in, or a tech article I wanted to read and keep for reference. My ex-wife would give me a hard time for reading them. "Most guys want to look at women, but you'd rather look at trucks!". I guess it was a good thing I decided to stop. But then I subscribed to Easyriders mag cuz I was hot and heavy into Harleys and other early American motorcycles. Then she would give me a hard time, since they use hot models with their feature bike of that month. Plus there was nudity in covered events. "You just want to look at the women!". As you can see, it was a no win situation. Should give some insight on an example of why my marriage did not work out

Re: Old car magazines

I have a collection like that one MrD ... I tossed everything newer than '75 years ago, and any I have purchased since then I toss when done, except for Rodders Journal.

Copy magazine covers on to 8.5x11. Get a gallon of Elmers. Pour some into a bowl and add some water (to taste lol) brush the back of the picture till its covered. Place on wall. Brush front of pic till its covered. Use a roller to smooth it out. It will still look like crap. Come back after it dries ... Whalaaaa, looks great and has a nice coating on it.

Course my garage doesnt look like this anymore. Lots of junk, lots of changes, and a spot for my grandson.

First picture second row, Rods and Customs is actually the first issue of Rod and Custom. They changed the name after the first issue.

Re: Old car magazines

I collect those early small car mags as well. I buy the ones with trucks on the cover or featured. I have a Rod & Custom, I believe, with a Von Dutch interview. I love that old stuff.

The wall o' mags or the drawer faces? BOTH! That is a type of collage. A very organized one. I clip pictures out and do the same thing, but more randomly, on plywood. You could also make a bar top that way with decoupage. Basically layered resin over top
